Look up the local chapter of Big Brothers and Big Sisters in your area. There are organizations that have after-school programs (community centers, churches, etc) which are always in great need of volunteers. Ask around at work; many of the parents there may well know of some of these programs. There are also tutoring programs for kids who just need a little one-on-one attention and help with homework. These are also constantly in need of volunteers.

From another side of the issue, if you can figure out a way to save one dollar a day (there are many ways you can make this happen) you can sponsor a severely needy foreign child. World Vision (use Google to find their web address) has a program where you can sponsor a child for $30.- monthly. You need to be willing to commit to this, but it's amazing the difference one dollar a day can make to a child who would otherwise probably not be able to attend school -- many countries do not have a free education as a birthright like we do in the west -- or have clean water to drink and food to eat every day. Look into this if you're even the least bit interested. There are several highly reputable children's help organizations. World Vision is one of those. I don't know the names of the others, sorry.

There are volunteer programs that can allow you to help in different ways.

You can help out in the Care Package Program! Please send items with a note of encouragement (optional) that we will include in Care Packages to foster youth in colleges and trades schools nationwide that are without parental support.

We receive many requests from wonderful individuals (like you) and groups who want to send Care Packages to OFA students. Due to confidentiality and liability considerations to protect both you and the student, we cannot release the personal contact information of the students we serve. OFA students rarely receive mail and Care Packages and small gifts mean so much and here is a way you can participate.

Gifts cards are lightweight and OFA students can use them conveniently no matter where they live ? For example:
- Amazon.com
- Barnesandnoble.com
- McDonalds Burger Bucks
- Book of stamps
- Target

Send in a gift card to:

Once you're out of school and have started your career you can look into participating in the vMentor program: http://www.vmentor.com/

And you can always look up your local foster child organization and find out if they need volunteers to help with office work, etc. That's always a great way to contribute.

You can help foster children by helping at the center where they are adopted out of, or give money or items needed for them. You could help support a family who does have these children, maybe help babysit or give them things needed, or do chores for the family.
Maybe you could do some tutoring.
