And how do you know if it has gone bad?

Alittle bit is cracked at the very edge. but most of it looks fine im just not sure.

This is from the Crisco web site. http://www.crisco.com/about/faqs.asp#1 Crisco can be kept one year once it's been opened.

It will have cracks in it, turns yellow to brown, smells bad. My rule of thumb is that if I have had it over 6 mos it gets tossed. I have shortening that is rancid. It can really run your stomach and if not worth the risk.

Shortening will last a long time stored in a cool, dry place......You can tell by the way it looks & the smell.....

if you open that can of shortening and is all dry and cracked at the surface, I pretty much say it is way too old !!!
*** also it will smell and taste rancid ***

At or near the end of shelf life, always sniff the container – discard if any odd (rancid) odor is detected.

You know it's over the hill when it tastes off. It'll have a stale unpleasant taste, may even smell stale.

I used to use shortening on my son until he turned 12 then I started using vaseline.

100, there's no point in shortening people after that age because they aren't going to get any taller anyway!
