I would have said that it didn't matter to me until I was actually in the hospital. I then caught myself hoping that I wouldn't get one of the younger docs.

There are a couple of factors going into this. If a doctor is too young, like right out of training, they have not yet learned how to put things in perspective, as their database of experience is limited. If a doctor is too old, they don't have the benefits of the newest there is in medical training, and it would take someone very dedicated, or not very busy, to keep up with all there is to know.

So, I look for someone in the 40-50 age range, but that is just my personal preference.

I've had trouble with young doctors who are just right out of med school. Quite a few of them think they are know it alls. A lot do not listen to the patients when they tell them that they feel something is wrong with their own bodies. One young doctor told me I had a cold, but I told her that it felt like pneumonia. She quickly told me about not having credentials and that I could not diagnose myself. I asked for an older doctor. The new doctor was much older, he checked me thoroughly and then sent me to get ex rays. When the pictures returned he said that I had pneumonia. He was very upset with the younger doctor, I've never seen anyone so angry. He said that doctors must work with the patients not against them. This is why I prefer older doctors, not because they may be more knowledgeable, although it's a plus, but because they know how to humble themselves( I'm guessing it takes years) and listen to their patients. Working with people is a real necessity when it comes to being a doctor, a seasoned M.D. might have this down.

the doctor must keep up to date in learning. Age does not matter, but I feel that a doctor just out of school is not seasoned enough.

It matters very much to lots of people.
You see it all the time in patients, they trust the middle aged doctor over the twenty something. It makes no difference about the skills of the doctor either.

Yes. Although a doctor serves his internship and a residency, practical experience gives him an advantage over a young, inexperienced doctor. Most doctors also continuue to study their whole lifetime. So choosing a doctor 45 years old (or more) should give you the benefit of his additional training.

As a trainee doctor myself, yes

Doctors with 10 to 20 years of experience are normally much better at making sound judgements

Conversely a doctor who is too old may make an excellent diagnotician but I wouldn't like him operating on me.

Yes, to me it matters. When the doctor is too young, say twenties, I get the impression that they don't have enough experience. When they are very old, say in their late sixties or older, I feel that they might make mistakes or forget something due to old age.

I think with some age comes wisdom and experince. Altho too old may not be accepting of newer, advanced medical practices. As long as an MD keeps up his education and learning, I'm fine.
I just don't want the person right out of med school any more then I want the hairstylist right out of beauty school.

I would definitely consider the age of my doctor, but I could not pass judgement on his ability immediately. It would take a few visits to get a reading.
