There is a child that was returned to the birth mom after abuse and now prefers to walk backwards when around her.

Clearly the child doesn't want the mother sneaking up on them again. I once knew a child who lined all his little toy soldiers up on the floor at night when he went to bed. He had been abused and was using the soldiers for defense. Always remember if you see a naked person running down the street screaming, there is a logical reason in THEIR mind for their action. Walking backwards around someone who has abused them is pretty logical if you think about it. The child probably was swatted a lot, so protects the rear end by backing all the time.

Interesting. How long has the child been away from the biological mother? And How old is he?

Children are very smart. Smarter than we credit them for. Its hard to say what the child is doing with knowing so little on the case.

I would say all is fine for the child, as long as he is in a safe home. I see children walk backwards from time to time. Motor control is an amazing thing that our brain does.
