Back when people had slaves and servants that minded their every rule it was acceptable to snap to get someone's attention. In today's society it is extremely rude and disrespectful. You should never snap to get someone's attention no matter who they are or what they do for a living. This includes snapping at a bartender or server. If you want to snap to get the attention of something/someone snap at your dog.

Depends on the situation. But for the most part, Yes it is rude. Especially if they are being disrespectful to you. But if they do not know you, then you do not have the right to snap your fingers at them, to get there attention.

It was once considered by the upper-class an appropriate way to get a waiter's attention, but that method of getting someone's attention is so over.

Yes, rude, but some otherwise polite people I know do it. They seem to be the multi-taskers who are talking on the phone, watching TV and texting someone at the same time. Then they snap their fingers for you to turn the TV down or bring them a pencil. They feel it is better than saying "please hold" to the person they are talking to I guess.

It should be pointed out to the snapper that it is an unacceptable and degrading way of getting someone's attention.

Yes it is, in this country. However, I have learned from my very European husband, that it is totally done where he comes from. Learned this after we were dating and I was horrified when he was snapping his fingers to get the attention of a waiter in a restaurant, and I stopped him. So, sometimes people just have to learn the customs of their new country, and not judge before you know why.

It's OK if you are on the dance floor. Not is it only rude, it is condescending. I absolutely will not respond to the snap; instead the person will get a look that says "don't do that again".

Yes it's very rude. It is almost like the person is too good to speak to the other person. I agree with what someone said earlier, the only time it is okay is if you are on the phone or other situations where you cannot speak to the person.
