i feel like taking them was a bad mistake instead of dealing w/ my problems however that was in high school 4-6 years ago where i hated to live each day. I can justify my life for them! I just feel a lot happier now than i ever did, even after my ex left me. I don't know Im taking a low dose of an anti-depressant right now, i don't want to be on it anymore! I just want to be more normal, however i have genetic past of depression in my family, i might as well just live w/ it...

It depends. If someone is slowly weened off the anti-depressants and is feeling alright, then they should be fine. If they start feeling depressed again, however, they should probably talk to their doctor about staying on them. If someone completely stops taking them, their depression will go down even further than how it was before and may result in suicide. Ok if you start off being depressed about a 5 on a scale of one to ten, then start taking anti-depressants and then your depression is a 1 out of ten, everything seems great. But if you suddenly stop taking them, You're brain hasnt had enough time to start making more of the hormones that create that feeling of happiness because its been so used to using artifical ones and you'll go to a 9 or 10 on a depression scale. If you dont want to be on them anymore, talk to your dr about getting a smaller dosage untill you completely stop and see how you feel. You can try releasing endorphines in a more natural way than with medication by excercising or doing other activities that would release more of those hormones. However, if this doesn't work for you, then keep taking them. Yea its a pain in the butt, but would you rather take them or feel like **** all the time? See what your other options are...

Anyone at anytime can slip into a depression. Usually when you are taken off the meds, you have a few weeks of "getting clear" going on. I know that if the person keeps up with his/her therapy and continues to be open and honest, they won't. It is all a matter of the persons willingness to change. I happen to be doing this myself and am having great success. I have been off of mine for 2 months now. I hope this helps!

You know what, only your Dr can or should answer this question, however if it helps you to know:
The answer depends on if your depression is clinical or emotional.
If you have an chemical imbalance that is causeing the depression - it can be corrected by medications and should be able to be brougth under control... and gradually weaned off.
If it is caused by emotional / mental / stress..... then councelling may be your cure.... being able to identify what is causing your stress and then managing it.
My thoughts are with you and wish you success in your struggle.
DO NOT give up.

Yes bc we become dependant on the pills to keep us elevated (which didnt do it for me) and when we stop, its like a shock to our bodies. Wheres the saratonin? Panic mode, but thatll only last a short while and then itll be back to regular depression. If you feel the meds arent doing it than you probably just need to vent.

Usually that is what happens. For some people they only need the anti-depressants for a short time and then they are fine. I've never met anyone like that but I heard a rumor that they exist.

Maybe. Depends on how long you took the medications and if you addressed the reasons you were depressed. Depression is typically a combination of physical and mental issues. Exercise is a great way to help yourself when you stop taking medications.

I did, but my friend (who is a guy) didn't. You're not 'doomed' to be on antidepressants forever. But please, don't hate them. I wish I'd never come off them-if I go back on, my family will know I've backslid. And hey! The army recently raised the maximum age-there's a good chance they'll loosen up some other standards about entry, too.

Yes, they can. I am dealing with this right now. Depression is caused by a lot of different things. Not just a chemical imbalance. Ongoing counseling can help.

yea, when i stop using my meds, i usually dont feel as happy as when i'm on them, I think prozac takes a week or two to get out of your system though, so its kind of gradual, and i usually dont really notice it at first, thats why you're supposed to take it every day because your level will just rise and fall every week and never stay where it should be....
