The highest rank ever held in the US Army was equivalent to a six star General. This rank was known as General of the Armies, and was held by George Washington, and John J. (Blackjack) Pershing.
For the Navy, the highest rank ever held was called Admiral of the Navy, and is also equivalent of a six-star Admiral. The rank has only been held by George Dewey.

General is actually the highest rank in the Army, Air Force, and Marines. Admiral is the equivalent in the Navy. You are looking at being a commissioned officer for 23-25 years before you get your first star or Brigadier General, 2 stars is Major General, 3 stars is Lieutenant General, and 4 stars is General. Some guys can shoot right up the ladder and others never go any farther than Captain. It is not unusual to see a 4 star general retire after 36+ years of service. The youngest general officer I ever heard of was a 34 year old 2 star general, but that was many years ago. Nowadays at 34 you are lucky to be a Major. Hope this helps.

Army -
5 star = General of the Army
4 star = General
3 star = Lieutenant General
2 star = Major General
1 star = Brigadier General
Air Force - 5 star = General of the Air Force
Marines - 4 star = General
Navy -
5 star = Fleet Admiral
4 star = Admiral
3 star = Vice Admiral
2 star = Rear Admiral Upper (used to be Rear Admiral)
1 star = Rear Admiral Lower (used to be Commodore)
Note: In pay scale both 4 and 5 star officers are considered O-10's, There has been 2 General of the Armies and 1 Admiral of the Navy which are 6 star equivalents
The reason Marines don't have 5 star officers is because it is a sub-branch of the US Navy.

(1.) General of the Army)
2.) General
3.) Leiutenant General
4.) Major General
5.) Brigadier General
6.) Colonel
I put General of the Army in parentheses because that rank has only been held by a few people, I think most of these ranks were awarded during World War II, I'm not sure though.
And it takes many years to attain these ranks (like 30-40 years), although there's no set limit to how long. These ranks are given to people who devote their lives to the military and do an outstanding job with leasdership skills.

The highest rank is Commander in Chief. Which is the President. Then following down are the Generals. 5 stars,4,3... you get the picture. Check out the chain of command at any of the military branches web sites.
