Muhammad's family belonged to the clan of Hashim, a branch of the Quraysh tribe. While the Quraysh was dominating Mecca, the Hashimis had little but religious prestige connected to the, at that time pagan, shrine of Ka'ba.

He was not a pagan. He believed in the relgion brought down by Abraham (PBUH), his ancestor, and this religion believed in one God and in Prophethood. It was a bit like Judaism but it was different since he was a gentile. The Prophet (SAW), on being asked what he thought of the 3 main pagan gods worshipped by his tribe, he replied that they disgusted him.

Mohammad (P.B.U.H) was of the same religion as all of the Prophets before him, including Noah,Abraham,Moses and Jesus (Peace be on all of them). And that is Islam,Islam means submission to the will of God and all of the Prophets submitted to the will of God and therefore were Muslims.

Prophet Muhammad didn't belong to any religion. He used to pray to God alone, while his people used to worship idols.

The tribe was pagan(worshiping statues) but the prophet did not follow them.
He was meditating alone in a far mountain, he was praising the Creator.
