it would have been a short and dull book.

Good question, but all I know of this is the Islamic story of how it happened.
God created Adam and Eve to live on Earth in the first place (taamir al Ard)/ to reproduce and make it a better place [and there might also be a wisdom I don't know of], so this was like 'meant to be'.
Proof: After that happened ( with no blaming to Eve or anything, just the serpent) they both asked for forgivness from God and God gave it to them but they still had to descend to Earth.
So they actually were forgiven when they descended to Earth.
Why did they have to descend to Earth if God had forgiven them already? I think cz God wanted them to live on Earth in the first place for the reasons I mentioned above..
=)
we're here now anyway, aren't we? ;p

I think God did forgive them but there were still consequences for their action and God knew he had a plan for all mankind in the making. So he let Adam and Eve out of the garden to make their own way, gave them free will and told them to procreate the earth. God gave early man a method to redeem himself through the Jewish law and sacrifice followed by his new covenant with man in the form of Jesus. I think Adam and Eve had a healthy respect for God and were repentant for their sin but eating from that tree gave them the knowledge of good and evil, they became aware of their nakedness and had to learn to fend for themselves.

The whole Old Testament and New Testament leading to Christ's death is to prove to mankind that he cannot get to heaven on his own initiative. That a savior was necessary to intervene with the Father. There could not have been another way because the Father could not look upon sin.

In some versions of the bible, God said that Adam would die on the day he ate the fruit. So I guess if they said they did it on their own he would have killed them. By telling the truth (that they were tricked by the serpent) God cut them some slack and let them live but punished them.

Forgiveness or not god said we would die if we ate of that tree. Now here we are on the fast track to death; over population, species extinction, poisoning of the earth, epidemic diseases. If we want forgivness and to live then we need to spit out that apple.

That is a very good question, even through God knew from the beginning when He through Satan and his angels out of the heavens that this was going to happen. But that's an interesting concept you brought up I've never thought about it that way.
