Depends on what you prefer. Large, medium, small or tiny dogs. If you work all day who will take it out to play and use the bathroom? Do you want protection too? Go with larger. Cuddly companion, go smaller. Humane society & dog shelters are a good choice for a dog. Lots of choices and not real pricey like pure breeds. Plus you save a life. Do research and decide what YOU are really wanting and how much work you will put into them. They take alot of time and training. Do you have the time to put into it? Don't just get a dog only to decide you aren't ready for the responsibility and give it up. That's why there are so many unwanted animals now. Don't make a hasty decision. Dogs need lots of love and care too. Good luck.

I have four dogs, A black Lab, two Boston terriers, and a Chahuaihua or whatever fox terrier (smooth) mix. Out of them, A boston Terrier I think would suit you. They can be left alone for long peridoes of times, though not really needed. They need love, and training and thats all.
Owning
His coat is easy to care for when it comes to grooming, a few strokes with a soft brush will keep his short, smooth coat gleaming. He is loving and sensitive, merry and bright, at times a clown and has a deep love for his family and children. Usually he will get along well with other family pets if introduced to them at a young age.

Characteristics
The Boston Terrier is a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short-tailed, well balanced dog, brindle, seal or black in color and evenly marked with white. The head is in proportion to the size of the dog and the expression indicates a high degree of intelligence. The body is rather short and well knit, the limbs strong and neatly turned, the tail is short and no feature is so prominent that the dog appears badly proportioned. The dog conveys an impression of determination, strength and activity, with style of a high order; carriage easy and graceful. A proportionate combination of ''Color and White Markings'' is a particularly distinctive feature of a representative specimen.

Did You Know
The Boston Terrier is one of America's native breeds having been developed in Boston, MA. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1893. The Boston Terrier is also sometimes called ''the American gentleman among dogs.''

Non Sporting Group
Good luck!!!!

Definitely think about getting a German Shepherd. Even if you live in an apartment or a house both will work as long as you exercise the dog and train it. A well trained GSD can make a loveable pet that will be your best friend for life. It will protect you, want to engage in activities that you do, will want to lay with you, etc. They will get attached to you. You just have to make sure to do your homework and get one from a good breeder although I have friends who have gotten them from the pound and have trained them and they are still great pets. These dogs are so smart in every aspect. You can train them, they will be protective over you if they sense you are in danger-I LOVE these dogs. Other good ones to think about are Golden Retreivers or Labs. They also make good pets but I heard some labs are really hyper. If you do get a GSD make sure it is from an American Bloodline, as the German ones usually require a lot of attention and exercise.

Do you have the time to house break a puppy-ASK YOURSELF!
If not, there are older canines you could adopt from your local pet shelter. I say this b/c they can hold themselves longer than a pup....should you be away at work.
Should you live in an appt.-go for a small dog or med. size dog.
Any good canine can be a good companion-having a wonderful owner that really cares! Give plenty of TLC & do put the time into obedence train your pet.

A yorkiepoo. Best of both breeds (yorkshiere terrier and a poodle). They don't shed and are so smart. They grow to be anywhere from 5-20lbs. I personally don't like the smaller dogs the one we have is about 14 pounds and he is the PERFECT size. He fits perfectly in our lap but doesn't look like a 'toy' like the celebrities are using their dogs as.The best companion dogs they are very loyal and love their owners unconditionally.

A boxer. they are great guard dogs, but they love people. this sounds like an oxy moron, but its not. They can sense if someone is bad and they will attack if someone comes into the house that they dont know. they will sense it if you know the guy or girl comin in, and will not attack. They love children, and are very smart, and they are really muscular and strong, and love to play, not just sit around. on cold nights during the winter, they love to cuddle. it may not seem very manly now, but it is great because they are so soft and cool. They are a little bit of everything.

any dog is loyal and loving, it's in the raising. but, for a good breed, I'd go with a lab or a shepherd or a pitbull. they r very loyal and very smart and very good for protection. course, a chihauhau can do some serious ankle damage!!
