I recently stopped at a gas station in Oregon, and there were attendants there to fill up my gas for me. I've never experienced this before. Should I have tipped the person? If so, how much?

I live in Oregon and it's a State law that an attendant has to pump your gas for you. Most gas station employees don't expect a tip (and my observation is that the larger percentage of people do not tip). But if the service is good, it's a nice gesture to leave them a tip. Also, to my knowledge, tips are not factored into their wages.

This is a major misconception for most people. As a recent transplant I succomned to the same feeling you had. After tipping the gentleman at the local Shell station, my buddy, who had lived there since childhood, promptly slapped me upside the head and said "thats not how we do it here". I guess that full service is a way to keep employment levels higher. Oregon always had one of the highest unemployment rate and a liberal government did something to help out the common folk.

I've seen attendants at all NJ gas stations, and i've never seen a person tip an attendant for that. I go there once/4 months. That's all they do and they get paid for it. if you make a payment by credit card, there is no option for TIP, like restaurants.

Wow! That brings back memories and I"m only 42! Back in the day they used to check your oil and wash your windows. I would assume that no tip is required.
