ANDOVER -- If Abraham Lincoln were alive and waging the war on terror, our greatest Republican president might be doing the same thing George W. Bush is doing as commander in chief.

Infuriating the Democrats.

Lincoln no doubt would find it necessary to suspend the writ of habeas corpus -- the right of one to challenge imprisonment in front of a judge -- and his wishes would include doing so for U.S. citizens who might exhibit excessive antiwar sentiment.

But chances also are that by now, more than 31/2 years into the war in Iraq, Lincoln would have raised taxes, reinstituted a draft, fired generals until he found his Ulysses S. Grant and crafted a speech eloquently defining for a divided populace why the last, best hope
of Earth is right to "give confidence to the people in the contested regions that the insurgent power will not again overrun them." (Lincoln's words in December 1863, not Bush's in 2006.)

He had the same problems during the Civil war as Bush has now and he didn't give up .

All the "Arm Chair Generals " and Bush Haters need to read some history .

Our enemies , terrorists , N.Korea , Iran , Hugo Chaves , Castro , see us as divided and uncertain and that makes them bolder and more apt to do something really stupid .

DUH!

What do you guys all think? You think that Bush is really acting like a total idiot?

People call bush an idiot because they use him, the president, as a scapegoat for their fears about the future and their decisions.

We're in the middle of a war and, lo, people are dying, taxes are going up, money's being spent, fuel is being sought after...

I'd be surprised and worried if the price of sugarcane was rising really fast. You see, that would mean that our president is an idiot. But everything going on here is perfectly practical.

Honestly, there's something wrong with modern American society...

Very eloquently put, son. I, however, fail to see the point in this, another "what if" question. For instance, "what if " you opened the newspaper one day and read, to your horror, that scientists had discovered that it wasn't the Dolphins which were sentient after all. It is, sadly, Tuna. In the wake of attacks on the HQs of Bumblebee, Starkist, and Chicken of the Sea, Congress admitted publicly that we humans have a lot of explaining to do. Get my point? I know, but how could I resist, you are a smart guy. thanx. --Rat

Lincoln would have done one thing different. He would not have hesitated destroying the enemy, no matter how loudly the other party would have whined. The end of the war would have been of paramount importance compared to polls.
