No matter how long you leave it on, you may still get yellowy orangy hair.

It depends on if it is natural or colored hair, how light or dark it is to begin with, whether the natural color is ashy or golden (underlying pigment), if it is curly or straight....yah a whole lot of things.

I always reccomend you get the first cleach job done in a salon...touch ups are easier. Trust me, trying to save a couple of bucks doing it your self may end up costing you big coin in repairative treatments or color corrections.

If you screw up...DON"T just slap your natural color back on, it doesn't work that way, as you have stripped out some of your underlying pigment.

And for god sakes, if it is burning WASH IT OFF and use cooler water to do so and don't scrub!!! just let the water run.

With bleach you are almost always going to need to tome afterwards, bleach isn't normally for the final effect, but a primer.
When it comes to toning, and you can't afford a specialist..the drugstore beauty girls normally take courses and can be helpful, or there should be a 1-800 # on the box.

Was it the powder or liquid type? Once bleach is mixed, it has a short life. You need to use it immediately, and within about an hour, much of the strength is gone. It will be useless in couple hours. You cannot save mixed bleach. If it was the powder type, it can keep for many years, as long as it is kept dry. The liquid or oil type bleach should also last a long time, but I've never kept it for long. They are not as strong, so I never used them. Are you sure you used it correctly? It sounds as if you didn't know the proper way to mix them, or how to apply it.

If you overlapped it onto already bleached hair wash it out now!!!If not leave it on until you get the desired effect but not longer than 40min. You can check to see if it is the right color by spraying a couple of strands with some water and wiping off the bleach with towel. If not light enough reapply to that area and check again in 5 min.Good luck!
