I think he did the right thing... You should work with her so she knows how to do it on her own eventually by standing by when there isn't anyone else in there to start. I would also mention to him to ask if there is a family rest room at where ever he is at. Our mall has several. Inside is a sitting area and a bathroom with a door of its own.

Last year, in the UK, a mother let her eleven-year-old daughter go to the toilet alone in a busy supermarket that they often shopped in. The child was only gone for a few minutes but in that time was raped. These perverts only need a second to steal your child (or their innocence).
I'd say keep your child with you even if that means taking her into the men's toilets or, when she's older, having her father holding the door to the women's toilets open while she's inside so he can monitor who goes in and out. If people don't like that then tough. It's better than a few people in a huff than your child in danger. But your husband should also ask if there are parent and child facilities available as many stores these days are becoming more aware that fathers do have daughters.

he did the right thing. What if he let her use the ladies room alone and some weird lady was in there and did something to her, five year olds are pretty trusting. What would you have done with a 5yr old boy ? Probably have taken him into the ladies room..what is the difference. Her father was with her and she was safe. Good on dad, he should do the same thing next time.

The same thing moms with little boys do... You take them into the restroom you can enter, don't make a drama and production out of it the kid is more interested in peeing than in sightseeing....
By making the child close thier eyes you are letting them know there is something you don't want them to see... They will now want to see it no matter what it is... By making a big deal out of it, it has become a big deal... Better to just do the business and move on...
When my daughter was 4 she went shopping with her dad when he took her into the bathroom she asked "Why do boys got drinking fountains and girls don't ?" He explained they were urinals and explained their use, she did her business and they were off again no big deal...
When they got home she asked me "Do you know boys have drinking fountains that's aren't drinking fountains in thier bathroom?' I replied that I knew and they were urinals... She then made sure I knew what they were for and was no longer concerned by it...

I would maybe suggest to your husband to find a nearby employee and ask them to stand in the bathroom or ask them if there is an opening in the back of the restroom. They have women security guards at the mall, and thats what they are there for to protect people.I have 3 girls 7,3,and 9 months. We went to a public restroom once where there was a woman in there with a son who looked about 5 or 6,and the door had swung open, and then had my girls asking what "that" was. I was extremely insulted myself.Once theyre old enough I think to go by themselves at school which is 5 years, then Id let them go by themselves in a safe place and surrounding.

No big deal, I see little kids in male restrooms regularly.
Usually the girl does not have her eyes closed. The guys in there do not seem to mind.
I'm surprised the mall does not have a family restroom.

now days I don't even let my 10 year old go by herself. They have family restrooms in malls and sometimes in stores. Thats what he should use. I would rather her be with her dad, even if it is in the mens room with her eyes shut, than alone in a big bathroom with strangers crying if she needs help. To many bad things happen to little kids now days. I am paranoid.,

i believe he did the right thing. You cant just let a child wonder into a bathroom by them self you never know who might be in there as scary as that is. He did the right thing that s what i do to my sons and hubby does that with daughter if the need arises.

Next time he should look in the mall for a "family" bathroom. Most places have them now. If they don't, I would not suggest letter her into the ladies room by herslef (you just never know about anyone these days, man or woman).

I agree with the others when saying he did the right thing. yes she is 5, BUT I dont think shes ready to go by herself. Does she understand what a dirty toilet is? how to wash her hands the correct way? prob not. she still needs guidance in those areas, any child this age would.
