Why arent antidepressants available over the counter so people can get them whenever they want?

Just taking pills for depression is not enough-there has to be more to the process for recovery to be effective. And, as others have said, anti-depressants have side-effects (such as increased threat of suicide, with Accutane) and painful withdrawal symptoms, although they are technically 'non-habit-forming'

Antidepressants cause TONS of side-effects, and it often takes a long time to find the right one, even when you have a doctor helping you. Also, once you're on them, you can't just stop. Stopping suddenly is dangerous. So a doctor would need to help the person get off of them slowly.

because you need to be diagnosed first and treated before you can really tell what disorder you have.Many reasons why you cannot prescribe at any store,You might get the wrong medication and have bad side affects and get ill.That is why we have what is called the "DOCTORS" because they are experienced in our mental disorders/illnesses and they will treat you with the proper medication.I wish stores had the same experience too,but they wont really know much information....

because mental people will always want it - have an overdoes and die....people will abuse the medication being available over the counter
