what foods are best?

It's hard to give just one reason for choosing to eat organically grown foods, as there are several things to consider in making the choice. First there is the pesticide and fertilizer issue. Anything strong enough to kill an insect is not healthy for you either. The residues of many will remain on or even be absorbed into the plant, and through eating into you. Although there are studies and regulations regarding the maximum amounts that can be present, nobody really knows what effects lower levels can have, or how long they will remain in the body. Just about everyone has a small level of pesticide residue in their body, but nobody really knows what effect it has on them. Secondly, organic farming practices tend to produce foods slightly higher in nutrition because the plants are not artificially prodded to become bigger. Finally, organic farm practices are sustainable, and they do not have the impact on the surrounding environment that regular farming does. Since no pesticides or herbicides are used, there is none to enter the ground water below, or to run off into local rivers and streams. Since the insects are not being poisoned, the animals which eat them are also not being poisoned.
As to choosing which is the best choice, aside from being a personal one based on your ethics- I would have to consider the source of the food. Locally grown produce might be a wiser choice, even if it were not organic, simply because it would be fresher and therefore better nutritionally for you. Organic food produced in another state or even country had to be transported to you- using fuel and a vehicle which adds other pollutants to the environment, and therefore might not be as fresh or nutritionally advantageous. Organic foods also tend to be seasonally available- so if you want fresh strawberries in December, you probably are not going to find the organic variety.
It isn't a matter of which foods are best for you, although ethically speaking organic would be the ideal and most logical first choice in most cases. That is providing it is fresh and did not have to be trucked or shipped a long distance. If you feel strongly about the issue, it is more to everyone's benefit to encourage local producers to convert to organic farming practices and support their efforts to do so by buying it. We also need to return to the pracice of eating more seasonally available fruit and vegetables, so that there is not a need to ship items from a distance to provide us those strawberries and melons in the midst of winter. Frozen produce is the best alternative in most cases, and is just as nutritionally sound, if not actually better, in terms of freshness of product.
Good question, by the way- unfortunately the answer is not so clear cut.

Organic foods use natural herbicides and fertilizers (manure) instead of chemicals. Some say they taste better. Since organic foods use manure they are more susceptible to e-coli so make sure you wash (as you should with ANY produce) your produce thoroughly even if the package says that its triple washed.

There is a lot to more buying/eating organic so it would be Best if you did some research. Organic foods do cost more, so shop wisely.
