No, the differences are more about the dog's basic personality plus the way they're trained than whether it's male or female. Either sex should be spayed/neutered to help prevent health problems, so you wouldn't have to worry about a male marking territory, and you wouldn't have to worry about a females heats.

With 2 exceptions, my absolute favourites have been males throughout the years because to me, they seem to have a bit more charisma, pizzazz and personality. But it's a personal preference - either male or female makes a terrific companion!

Disclaimer: I've never had a Westie.

I prefer males for smaller dogs; females in the larger breeds. In my experience, and as a general statement (sorry), small female dogs don't seem to have as nice of personalities.

A lot of it will have to do with the age of the dog as well. The easiest will probably be a dog that is at least two years old. (Three for larger dogs.)

Here's a link that may help in the decision:

All dogs are different. Males tend to be a lil more hyper unless their manhood is taken care of. The Westie is a terrier with lots of energy and spirit. He doesn't go much for cuddling. He is a hardy dog, devoted and happy-go-lucky.
He is a fine family pet but tends not to get along with other pets. He requires regular grooming as his coat sheds more or less continuously. He has no "doggy" odor. I hope this helps you out!

Dogs personalities are unique, you cannot know what a dog will be like based on sex alone. There are no major differences in attitude based on sex.

I have 2 male dogs, and they are just as loving an well behaved as our female.

It's all in how you raise your dog, not sex. If you properly train, and love your dog, that is all that matters.

Good luck!

I have a boy and 2 girls. Other than the obvious, there is no difference. Of course, they are all fixed!
The only real difference is when you give belly rubs. Girls have nice long bellies and boys have stuff in the way!

Well. I hate to say this but boy dogs will get embarrasing boners and they might even try to rub them up and down on a human's leg-- gross I know--- but it happens!
