I would say it would depend on a few things. For starters- is there a line behind you impatiently waiting? Second of all, do you mean like, one pack of gum, or like....four candy bars, some magazines, a pack of batteries, some chapstick, etc etc LOL I think if it's a thing or tow then it doesn't matter... or if the line isn't crazy long either!

I don't think anyone in line behind you is going to be upset over an extra pack of gum you grab at the last moment. Its perfectly fine. Now, entering the express lane with 10 extra items is just plain wrong. Just use your judgement. Would YOU be upset over the person in front of you grabing a pack of gum that put them at 11 items?

"10 items or less" is for people who have only a hand full of things and want to get out the store a little faster than waiting on someone with alot of items. you can get away with a few more items over ten.

People who go through the 10 items or less with a big cart of stuff are idiots. I don't care how many impulse items they buy, if they hog up the line they need to be shot.

I've never heard of a store that would say, "get out of that line" if you have a few items over the limit. It would probably take more time to get you to move to another line instead of just ringing your items up. After all, the more the store sells, the more profits they reap!

Go on and buy them. The management placed them in the "10 items or less" Check-Out, so that should tell you that they are encouraging you to purchase those extra items , no matter what lane you are in.

I think you should let your gut tell you what to do, however I don't think anyone would mind.
I'll tell you what does burn my @$$ is those people who get in line with 30 or 40 items and then break them up into groups so that Nonna pays for 10 and then Momma pays for 10 and then poppa pays for ten and then little jimmy pays for ten. I dont think this was the spirit in which the express Isle was created, and who do these people think they are fooling anyway?????
Personally I will only use the self serve check outs now....no muss, no fuss!!!

Yes. Jeez, they're not going to call the grocery police on you if you have more than 10 items. They just don't want somebody with a cart full of groceries holding up the line.

They won't count the EXACT number of items you have. People go through those lines with HUGE baskets of stuff - now THAT's rude. Don't stress over your gum.
