Good Question! I bring to a boil about 1 quart of water. then add four or five,, depending on your taste, tea bags and let them simmer 4 or 5 minutes. I pour that into a pitcher with 1/2 cup ( or to taste) of sugar. I add water to the tea bags left in the pan I simmered them in, let it sit a minute or two, and pour that into a 2 quart pitcher Add more water , if needed,to make 2 quarts .
There is also SUN TEA which is fun and oh so easy. In a gallon jar, fill with water, toss in your tea bags, let it sit in the sun for several hours and you've got tea!
Also, there are FAMILY SIZE tea bags, which are BIG tea bags and they tell on the box how many to use and the method.
I generally use Tetley or sometimes Lipton tea bags. lately I have been making ice tea with Celestial Seasons different herbal flavored and green tea ( you can have it caffeinated or de-caf) and they tell you on the flap inside the box exactly how to make ice tea.....there's lots of flavors to experiment with, and you can mix them too!
GOOD LUCK !

Unless you want to use an ice tea mix, such as Lipton's or Crystal Light On The Go, put 4 or more tea bags in a 1 qt glass measuring cup. pour hot water over at allow them to steep. Pour into a pitcher, and add ice + cold water. Stir. Do this until the pitcher is full, but not over filled. Put into the refrig and let it sit for at least 1 hour. That's what I do.

FIRST UP, FIND THE KIND OF TEA YOU LIKE. THEN BOIL ABOUT TWO OR THREE CUPS OF WATER(WATER KETTLE PREFERABLY, BUT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ONE IT IS OK. USE A POT) ONCE YOUR WATER IS AT A ROLLING BOIL(LOTS OF BUBBLES) CUT OFF THE HEAT, TAKE THE TEA BAGS(I PREFER LIPTON FAMILY SIZE) PUT THEM IN THE WATER, AND PUT THE LID BACK ON THE KETTLE(OR COVER YOUR POT) NOW LET THE BAGS OF TEA SET IN THE WATER FOR TEN TO TWENTY MINUTES(THIS IS CALLED STEEPING) THE LONGER YOU LET IT STEEP, THE STRONGER THE TEA WILL TASTE.
FOR SWEET TEA, YOU WILL NEED TO ADD BETWEEN ONE HALF TO A FULL CUP OF SUGAR WHILE THE TEA IS STILL WARM(THE SUGAR BLENDS EASIER THIS WAY). THEN POUR THIS OVER INTO YOUR TEA PITCHER, AND FILL IT THE REST OF THE WAY WITH COOL OR COLD WATER. NOW YOU HAVE TEA
IF YOU DO NOT WANT SWEET TEA, THEN SKIP THE SUGAR STEP .
SOME PEOPLE(IN MY FAMILY) LIKE THEIR TEA FRESH AFTER THE WATER STEP, WHILE IT IS STILL STEAMING,JUST POUR IT INTO A GLASS AND THEY ARE READY TO GO. FOR THE REST OF US THOUGH, FILL A GLASS WITH ICE(REMEMBER THAT THE TEA WILL STILL BE HOT ,UNLESS YOU USED ICE WATER TO DILUTE IT, SO MAKE SURE TO HAVE ENOUGH ICE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE HEAT OF THE TEA.
I HOPE YOU ENJOY THE RECIPE AND THE TEA IT MAKES!

Take a one-gallon pitcher (make sure it's heat-proof) and place 4 to 6 (depending on how strong you like your tea) tea bags in the bottom. Pour boiling water over the teabags, continuing to add water until you've filled the pitcher. Cover the pitcher tightly and refrigerate until cold. If you like your tea weaker, remove the tea bags, otherwise leaves them in the pitchr. Keep refrigerated when not using. Tea keeps well, at least one week, getting stronger the longer it sits (if you keep the bags in).
Optional: To add flavor and mellow the bitterness of the tea, add anywhere from 3 to 12 fresh mint leaves (again, depending on how strong you want the mint flavor to be) while the tea is still boiling hot. Leave the leaves in the pitcher along with the tea bags.
Sweetening (optional, obviously): Personally, I like this tea unsweetened. However, if you like your tea sweetened, sweetener of any type can be added to individual glasses of tea at an average of one to two packets/teaspoons of sweetener per large glass. If you prefer to sweeten the entire pitcher at once, my recommendation would be to either experiment on your own, or go with Tori's recipe (the Southern Sweet Tea one): I rarely take sweetener in my own fresh-brewed iced tea, and I NEVER sweeten the whole pitcher at once (because different people prefer different types and amounts of sweetener).

boil water on the stove. turn it down to simmer, add four lipton tea bags. allow to seep (sit) for 10 minutes. Pour into a gallon pitcher. add 1 cup of sugar. fill the rest of the pitcher with cold tap water. allow to cool in the refrigerator...enojoy
this is how we do it in the south....if you are not up for Sweet Tea, leave out the sugar.

Make a cup of normal tea and let it grow cold. Then add ice. Don't try putting it into the refigerator while it is hot as it will destroy the machine.
