Don't know about 'illegal' bloody painful more like. If you're concerned about speeding cars in a 30 mph zone, there are less painful ways to make your point. Try this...
Buy a high visibility vest from B&Q, buy a flat white police cap with the chequered pattern, borrow a hair dryer and go and point the hair dryer, wearing your 'fancy dress', at the speeding cars. Stand at the side of a busy stretch of 'fast' road, and watch those cars "crawl" past you, note the sheepish looks on the drivers faces too.
There you go, a less fatal way of getting your own back on neglegent speeders.....Have fun!!

Well it's pretty hard to judge the speed of a car as a pedestrian and it's not a good way to make a protest about speeding if you value your life at all. If speeding is a problem near the crossing, you encounter frequently then speak the traffic police and your local council, you may be able to get the crossing changed or sleeping policeman put in. I'd find out what you can do to change the problem that won't involve you getting run over!

You must be in the UK. The official name is Pelicon crossing (short for PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled crossing) but pelican is consistent with other crossing types named after animals and, in particular, birds. The term pelican crossing is used only in the United Kingdom, although, of course, similar traffic control devices are in use throughout the world.

Most Americans are imagining pelicans in Florida lined up to cross.

If people are driving too fast, and you jump in front of them, you're likely to be injured, either by their vehicle or their fists. Legal or not, perhaps it's not the smartest thing to do.

a pelican crossing in the UK is light controlled. therefore if the light was on green then although i don't think that it is illegal you have no right of way and the driver would not be doing anything illegal either (unless they were speeding). it would however be unbelievably daft and if you enjoy the freedom of being able to walk, not something i would recommend

I once saw a drunk student take a quick step in front of a car, he must have been foreign as he looked left (pointless in this country) and there hopped out, a car hit him at 30 ish mph, he bounced of the car onto his bum on the road, he went to get up laughing, but had damaged himself in a painful way and fell back down half way up. Anyway an ambulance came and took him away.
The police turned up and were breathalysing the driver and asking questions. They asked me "did he run out into the road or walk out??" I said "Sort of took one hop out straight into the path of the car" they then let the driver go, so I can only conclude from this that if you leap out into the road, you get what you get!!!!

You, my friend, are a gleaming pillar of justice, a martyr of safety. The legalities are neither here nor there, your local law enforcement agency should be thrilled to have such an avid and willing pedestrian safety enthusiast on their side. Jump away!

if the car was speeding, it would be above 30 mph... statistics show that if a car was travelling at 40 mph, you have an 80 pc chance of croaking it if i ran into you - not wise to jay walk with fast flowing traffic.

point to remember, when confonted with jay walkers - put the wash wipe on when approaching - they dont like it, but it's even better to aim for 'em.... if you've not got elecrtic mirrors - try hitting their kidneys with 'em.... dont bother if you've electic mirrors - they're expensive to replace.

well considering the speed limit is 30mph, driving too fast would hopefully get the driver in trouble....if the driver cant stop in time at the crossing, hes driving too fast and is a danger to pedestrians....nothing else to it....im sure they teach you to stop at pedestrian crossings when you see someone there during your driving lessons...and obviously if you dont see them there, your awareness is not good...therefore u shouldnt be driving...

Cool! I didn't know pelicans can drive. And if they drive so fast they should be punished.

Just press the button and when the cars stop, just lean on the post with your finger on the button and a a big grin on your face. Gosh they will laugh.
