I am just curious to what kind of math your child is doing right now. It seems to me that my third grader should be doing ALOT harder math than what she is. She goes to one of the best school systems around here, and what she is doing is too easy for her that I am trying to get her to go with the 4th graders for math.. what is your 3rd grader doing in math???

But they are not doing multiplecation yet. That is why I want her to go with the fourth graders... the third graders are still doing simple addition and subtraction.. working on place value. I remember her doing this in first grade...

I wouldn't worry just yet. I was the same way it seemed my 1st grader and 3rd grader were on about the same wave lenght in math at school. I was planning on having a conversation with my daughter's teacher when suddenly she came home with multiplication and divison along with word problems. I did question the teacher later on about it and she said before getting into the harder stuff she wanted to make sure where all the kids were at so she would know which ones would need more help.

This early in the year it's pretty much review of what they've learned so far. My daughter is currently doing large addition and some estimation also some pre algerbra (i.e. x+10=15). She's bored out of her mind. Maybe we should get our brilliant 3rd graders together and give them a challenge. It's slightly annoying isn't it? I'm thinking they'll start getting more challenging work soon...I HOPE SO ANYWAY!!

Review right now, but his teacher said he would start mult. by Christmas, so we are doing that at home right now. Try buying computer games. My son loves Carmen Sandiego Math Detective. It will challange your daughter while everyone else is doing review. Another that he does occasionally is from School Zone Interactive Flash Action Multipication and Division software. It's not quite as fun, but it does have a table they can turn to for reminders when they forget one. One those really busy nights when one child has basketball and another has scouts, it's great to turn to that instead of doing flashcards, and is a fun change for my son.

I really hope this helped. It helped my son who seemed to be at the top of his class in math.

Good Luck and God bless you and your daughter.

My son is doing the same type of math as your daughter. Our school district implemented a new math program last year and some of it is a bit more difficult. They have to figure out problems differently then we were used to when we were in school.
If you want her to learn more teach her at home. Get some multiplication cards or something and work with her. That's what I would do.

You're child may just be doing review work. If you have questions about it, check with you states department of education, they probably have a website. In Arkansas, you can go to the website and pull off the frameworks (here http://arkedu.state.ar.us/curriculum/benchmarks.html#Math ) that tell what children should be learning in each grade. That might help you assess how your school is doing.

All I have to say is "wow".

I had a buddy back in college from China. By the time he was in 3rd grade, he could add, subtract, mulitply, and divide, and at this point they were doing nothing but word problems. They started Algebra in 4th grade.

Wow. No wonder we are falling behind.

I found the first month of school they are mainly refreshing the kids memories. Right now my daughter (grade 3) is doing greater/lesser values, fact families and number orders. They still need to add money and adding 3 large numbers. I believe before Christmas they will introduce mulitiplication.

Every school starts with a review of what they learned last year before moving on to new material. They will usually start multiplying after Christmas.

Place value, adding money and simple multiplication through word problems. I think that's the basic 3rd grade curriculum.
