The morman site has fantastic resources. We traced our family back to about 1500 through it and best of all its free. Takes a lot of work though!

There are some Genealogy sites which are free, but most of them you do now have to pay for.
One of the cheapest is genesreunited, it's £10 a year, and to be honest it's great, it's helped me in my family tree no end.
The only problem I can see is that you say you want to contact relatives ... most of the Genealogy sites give details from way back, you'll be hard pressed to find recent relatives unless you can find someone on them with the same people in their tree.

Theres an almanac, you know a collection of names for addresses for every place in the world. Forget the geneology sites if you know where abouts they were from. Its Guys Almanac i think you should be looking for and i hope you have an address. there are also exhibitions sometimes for this kinda thing i passed an internet search service stand once that did a name search for a fiver or some cash charge.

To suck you in then spit you out when you catch on to their lies, try your local studies library, they are very helpful in getting you most things you want and will put you on the right track and its all FREE.
