Blu-Ray players have backward compatibility with DVD, so will they play HD DVD aswell?

No, not yet. However, there are reports that several companies are developing players that will play both formats.

As everyone else has said: no. HD DVD and Blu-ray are the two massive rivals of the next generation of digital entertainment, and their factors of production are entirely different; their purpose, however, remains the same. But to correct another answerer's response, there was a report a few days ago about an internal disc drive for PCs that would support both Blu-ray and HD DVD technology. I can't remember the company that proposed this idea and such a device would probably not be available until Q4 2007, but it HAS been tentatively scheduled for production.

No, you cannot play HD-DVD disks in a Blu-Ray player, and Blu-Ray disks cannot be played in HD-DVD player. The encryption is different.

However, in the future, some electronics manufacturer may make and sell a player that plays both formats.

Choose your format. Either HD DVD or Blu-Ray.

No you will not be able to play HDDVD's You will have to await until they realease a combination player, although one is not planned at this stage.
