It is heat activated and burns the cancer. Makes it smaller. For example, my dad has brain cancer. They made a wax model of his head so when the raditation was centered on his tumors it would not burn his head. They directed the beam right on the cancerous tumor. He still had burnt ears and a burnt face, like a bad sunburn. It also dried up his face and it was scaley. I'm not sure about prostate cancer but that's what happened to my dad. He has to have chemo and raditation both.

Radiation is focused to kill the targeted cells. It is generally less invasive than chemo-therapy which is systematic. Radiation is preferred as it can be targeted to a specific site. Think along the lines of a laser. Though it is not that focused. Gamma waves are very short wavelengths, and can be targeted pretty specifically. Chemo is basically a poison, that is just a little more leathal to cancer cells than the rest of your body.

It depends on what type of radiation treatment he is getting. If it is implants, they focus on killing the bad cancer cells, as any radiation treatment, but is more accurate than other means. He needs to speak with his doctor about his concerns.
