is it simply a case of not washing your hair for long enough and the hair forms dreads by itself or is that an urban myth?

I haven't got dreads myself so would not know, but I know a lot of people who do - technically if you leave it long enough it will dread but it really requires actual care and oils to get it to dread correctly.

If you have ever seen a homeless/crazy person, i.e. someone who is obviously not quite 'with it' enough to care for themselves, you will see what I mean, it is more of a knotty mess of half hair half dreads than actual good-condition dreads.

This site - http://www.knottyboy.com - is GREAT for people with dreads, wanting dreads, or just wanting to know about dreads, I recomend you have a look :o)

no it is not as simple as not washing your hair you need to do what we call an inter lock. where you twist the hair to look like a curl then take the end pass it though the root of the hair and pull down. you will also need hair wax to keep the twist this must be done every month or as needed

if your under 18:

eat two raw hot peppers right before telling your parents you got a bad report card and you just got in a car accident, causing their insurance rates to be raised. the response will do the rest...

if your over 18: assuming your not driving the next day watch american idol auditions while drinking a bottle of burbon....

PS: barring that there have to be hair styling sites online. try doing a google search for how to make dreadlocks, how to style dreadlocks, etc. peace and good luck!

It depends on your hair type. if you are African, hold you hair ain bits and twist, add egg yolk and leave it without wash. Wash out once a month and never cut it.

If youa re white, seek professional care in a saloon. I do not recommend since it weakens and spoils your natural hair.

For real dreads, go to http://www.knottyboy.com/ as has previously been mentioned. If you're thinking about getting dreads though, but aren't sure if they'll look good or want something less permanent, try http://www.braidstorm.com/ to find out about fake ones.

twist one-inch sections of your hair, then squeeze it with a hair straightener from the bottom to top... this will help you begin forming the dreadlocks
