What do you think about these teen girls smoking to have smaller babies? i think its disgusting, a smaller baby is not achieved in this way and a smaller baby does not mean a less painful birth. Do any mothers agree/disagree? Do you think mums to be are provided with enough information and care during pregnancy?

I thinks the girls who are smoking to get smaller babies have no idea what giving birth is really like. There is very little difference in the pain levels between giving birth to a 4lb baby and a 10lb baby. They both hurt enormously so although smoking will make your baby smaller, it will still be just as painful AND you will probably damage both your own and more importantly your babies health!!

Not very well educated are they...I think a certain amount of blame has to lie with these girls parents...surely their mums must know they are smoking during pregnancy...but then again they shouldn't even be pregnant in the first place.

I had my child at 24 and felt so out of my depth, but I have a very supportive mum who held my hand all the way through (and still does now 6 yrs later) I think you learn your parenting skills from your own mum and dad or carer......what hope have these kids got...babies having babies....council house, Monday book these girls don't know what the are letting themselves in for......

Surely they didn't just start smoking when they got pregnant in order to have smaller babies? I remember hearing something about this on the radio but wasn't paying that much attention.

I think mums are being provided with information and the such during preganancy, and if you're a smoker as much as you want to give up to give your baby the best start, sometimes it's a task you just can't do ... even with the best will in the world.

I think the emphasis should be on helping these people cut back as much as they can, and not to put quite as much pressure on to give up. Obviously if they can give up smoking it would be the best all round, but even cutting back would be a help.

Now I've heard some stupid things in my life, and when I heard this, I thought this had to rank amongst the most rediculous.

Now, anyone else think Wossy's suggestion to 'put something in the water system' the other day is a good one? And I'dve thought these girls would be taking more care of their ticket to a free council flat.

More seriously though, if this is their attitude during the whole situatuion, and it relects their intellgence (or lack of it), then these are the sort of people who should be banned from breeding. Should get such thick people out of the gene pool anyway.

Some people really are stupid beyond belief.

Yeah, since everyone knows the horrible consequences of smoking just in general, when you're NOT pregnant, think of what it does when you have a kid growing inside of you. Although it is an addiction, it can be overcome, and DEFINITELY should be if pregnant. Guess what...smoking may be linked to lower birth weight babies, but it also is linked to much higher risks of deformity and physical and mental damage. To think that someone would risk the child's well being knowingly is beyond belief.

smoking whilst pregnant is not only very dangerous for the babys health but the mothers health too. i think its disgusting how these women decide to smoke specifically so they get a smaller baby, they should think of the consequences of what it can cause to the baby, not only throughout the birth but in many years to come. my mum smoked while pregnant with me and i am so short bacause of it,and i have had problems in the past with chest infections. do not smoke while you are pregnant!!

Funny that! Back in the 60s and early 70s when my Mum had her 5 pregnancies, her GP advised her to smoke in order to keep the weight of the baby down.

I think that mothers that care will research and find that information during pregnancy. I know what is going on with my baby's development at ALL TIMES. I have had someone say "keep smoking, your baby will be easier to deliver". My thoughts were that is Assinine!

Girls who think this is acceptable are so lacking in any level of intelligence that they should be shot - how the hell can you justify condemning your child to a lifetime of disease purely through a selfish act?

Sorry, it's time we licenced the bearing of children following a solical workers check to ensure these iditotic rejects cannot continue to breed.

I smoked for 12 years but gave up when my wife and I decided to start a family - the least I could do to offer my child the best start in life.
