My pharmacist recommended mega doses of L-Lysine. It does seem to speed up the healing, and maybe even make them less severe if you start taking the L-lysine at the first hint of a canker sore. I buy mine at Walmart (the ones with the gold metal lid) and I take 2 tablets about 3-4 times/day.

When I was in the service, the corpsman put silver nitrate on the sore. Very painful but the sore disappeared literally overnight. I do not have silver nitrate handy, so I rub salt on it.
