Your best bet is actually to sit down and figure out what you can afford. After you have a budget in mind let her help you choose the ring.... you might be surprised to find that she doesnt like diamonds and the perfect engagement ring for her is cheaper than you expected. You can still be spontaneous.... just ask her to marry you with a band of paper that says "Your Ring, Your Choice" or "Will you marry me" or something else that she can add to your wedding scrapbook later.... and put it in a jewelry box or on her finger even. This also solves the problem of knowing her ring size. Good Luck.

Walmart is most certainly the way to go. My husband got me an engagement ring there for a reasonable price and come to find out my brother had gotten my sister in law one from a large chain jewelry store that's exactly the same and paid three times the amount my husband did. I am the type who does not care what it cost its the sentimental value that means the most to me. You can also check pawn shops if your fiancee would be cool with getting a used ring. Hey as far as I am concerned a diamond is a diamond.

If you don't care to have a ring that has been used before, go to a pawn shop. Otherwise, try to find someone who sells jewelry for independently and not for a store. Don't go to any retailer. You will spend about two and a half times what the ring is worth.

I agree with the previous post. For us, having a bigger, lavish wedding is more important than an engagement ring so I told him to skip the ring altogether so that we can put that extra $2000 - $5000 towards the wedding and honeymoon. He still wanted to get me one so I told him to just get a $200 CZ ring and trust me, no one knows it's a CZ except the 2 of us!

If you are worried about finances, PLEASE be sensible and skip the engagement ring. It is optional.
There are so many more important things your money should be going towards, like a place to live, your future together... Many couples these days have realized that the engagement ring fad is just not worth buying into.
She will still love you without an engagement ring. You can be engaged without one. (I am!)

We got mine from an eBay store. Just make sure to do a lot of research on whatever place you choose (whether it's online or not). I like eBay, because you can see comments from hundreds to thousands of previous customers....if the company does any shady business, you'll know. Also, check the better business bureau-www.bbb.com. If they're an actual company, you'll find them on there.
Also, be sure you do your research on diamonds. Know everything there is to know about color, cut and clarity....you can easily find this information by doing a google search for '4 c's diamond'

Walmart. They have some beautiful wedding rings at a real cheap price, or even a pawn shop.
