I would get him Neutered for health reasons. thats really good that he listens to you. With the trust part Huskies are known for their aloofness.

Good Luck :)

You should get him neutered anyway. Not only will it help keep him from running away when females are in heat but it will lower his risk of get testicular and other cancers. Be aware however that huskies usually will run when given the chance so i would never trust him off leash. Huskies were bred to run and run they will. I have two and we have chased after them plenty of times when the door was left open too long. Unless you plan on using him as a stud, definately get him neutered for his own well being, his health and safety if he every runs away.

He needs to be neutered anyway, it will add years to his life and greatly lower his risk of cancer.

You can never have 100% trust a dog won't run. Even the most well behaved, obedient dogs can run. Our neighbors have a dog who was trained as a police dog, and would never leave the yard... he chased a ball into the street and was hit, luckily he only broke a leg, and made it through...it could have been a lot worse.

What if he were to see a rabbit/squirrel/dog etc... and go chasing after it? He could end up hurt, or worse. Never let a dog off leash unless they are in a fenced in back yard.

Dawggurl is absolutely right -- there are many good reasons to get your dog neutered. But it will not stop him from running away.

This breed is very independent, and they will take off at any opportunity. They were bred to run and think for themselves, and this is exactly what they do. They cannot be allowed off-leash, and they must have a fenced-in yard. Living on a chain isn't good for a pet dog, for any number of reasons.

If there is no immediate reason for a Siberian to take off (i.e. a cat, another dog nearby, an interesting smell, children to play with down the street, boredom, etc.), they won't. But that's not a very likely scenario, and your dog ultimately WILL find something that leads him away.

Any responsible breeder of Siberian Huskies that I know of (including myself) will not sell puppies or adopt rescue dogs to people without properly fenced yards.

So get your boy neutered, and please keep him secure. His life really does depend on it.

Neutering is a good idea but no,it won't keep him from running off.
Exercise on the other hand will.
When you walk a dog off-leash it covers twice the ground you do.The dog gets tired and is happy to stay where you left him.
When you walk him on leash he gets to go as far as you do and at your pace. You get tired but he's still wanting to go.You go inside and he takes off.
Take him somewhere he can safely run off-leash everyday for at least 45 minutes and he'll be satisfied to hang out at home after he's neutered.

Once he picks up on the scent of a female in heat, all bets are off. He'll probably take off. Neutering him will definitely make him a more docile dog, plus it would obviously keep down on the pet population, which is a plus, unless you have definite plans of studding him out.

neutering him wont help the running away part- our ran away every chance he got until he died (and we even had a chain link fence- he dug under it) Neutering did help him become more calm (espescially when female dogs in heat around) but best bet is to have a good SOLID dog run for him. Good luck- and make sure he's registered so they can find you when he runs away and the pound picks him up!

You should definitely get him neutered for his health. However, that's not going to stop him from running away - that's what training's for. I suggest you take this dog to a good obedience class so they can teach you how to train your dog before he gets hit by a car!
