Why even post the question if you feel so bad you have to apologize beforehand? You could have found a non-offensive way to ask it.

Maybe: Before you were an atheist, what religion were you?

That way you would not display your personal prejudice too soon. ;-)

The two most gung-ho atheists I've ever met are both former Jehovah's Witnesses.

Of course, there are an increasing number of atheists who didn't come out of any religious tradition at all. Some may have raised in atheist households, or came from familes that didn't hold to any particular religious beliefs.

I'm a Catholic, and intend to stay that way. I do have a friend from Catholic school who became an atheist, though, and that's his business. Most of the atheists I know personally are ex-Fundamentalists.

majority of children are raised with some sort of religious beliefs. when we become adults, we either choose to see the big picture or keep our beliefs that if we don't have FAITH ( and Faith is believing in something you HOPE will happen ) that we will burn in HELL forever!

its like this police dept has 1000s of unsolved cases from the 1960s. So if we take these unsolved cases and apply mondern technology we, more than likely come up with some very different from conclusions.

I did the same thing with the Bible and also came up with some most intersting answers.

I started out as an Atheist, then became an Agnostic, then a Protestant, and am now a Catholic. Pretty much the opposite of what you asked.
