Ammonia in the dish soap will not poison the family because it will be rinsed off in the rinse water. The housekeeper probably believes that it helps clean the dishes better. If your friend doesn't like it she should just tell the housekeeper to stop doing it. Don't make a big deal out of it, just tell the housekeeper "I noticed that you are diluting the dishsoap with ammonia and I don't like it. Please don't do it anymore."

Well, ammonia is a cleaner (we use it in the bathroom); I don't know how dangerous it is if it is diluted; I think not much; the housekeeper is probably not trying to poison your friend but they might want to ask them not to use ammonia on the dishes anymore; it's ok for other places in the house. It probably is just how they learned to do the dishes.

It's never a good idea to mix things together, some products mixed together can cause harmful gases. Ammonia is not meant to be put into dish water. Your friend needs to explain to the housekeeper that she is never to mix products with one another and why as the housekeeper simply may not know.

Ammonia and vinegar both make the dishes sparkle and less water spots. She is NOT trying to poision anyone, lol. Please tell your friend this. And no it is not a cultural thing, but a $$$ saving thing also.

She's just trying to get the dishes clean! If they don't like it that way a nice discussion with her about changing it should do the trick!
