and I refused to follow, abide by him? Would everyone else decide to punish me?

I'm just a little confused, as I learned in church that god is loving and understanding, and people on here speak quite frequent of his love. So wouldn't he forgive me? But the mortals would not?

The mortals are punishing you right now, by blaiming you for your own speculative question.

God would never need to do such a thing. He or She would never require your obediance or your love. If s(he) were proven to exist and you didn't follow, you'd be no more or less guilty than the millions who follow him/her today even though she/he offers no proof.

We mere mortals are not worthy to judge the passions of the gods. That would be hubris.

God's Word says He will punish all non-believers.

We won't. He will.

then the "faith" in him would die, there would be no need for faith but instead for education. and it would negate much of the teachings of the bible about faith
