Okay, I'm traveling from coast to coast in an RV. I want to bring several bottles of wine with me but my husband says it's illegal. I say he's full of it. Soooo, CAN I do this and if so, how can I pack/store it without him seeing it?

You can take it along wherever you want. The only thing that makes it potentially illegal is if any of the bottles are unsealed. You run into the gray area of "open container" laws. You might want to check with the state patrol with regards to RVs.

There's no law against carrying your own personal supply of wine with you provided it's sealed and you're not operating the RV on the road while consuming. If there's a compartment on The RV that can only be accessed from the outside, that would be the ideal location to store the partly consumed bottles to satisfy any open container laws.

It might be safe if you pack it where you keep your "female items" ...it's a good chance he's got no interest snooping through them :)

I just came back from a cross country trip in a van.
Before I left, I bought a big jug of good red wine and wrapped it in an old bath towel. I tucked it down into the seat well. I have a Grand Caravan with the Sto' n' go seats. I pulled down the 3rd row for carrying stuff and left the 2nd row intact. I didn't have any problems. When I got to a motel, I took the bottle into the room each night to have a glass. Then stored back in the well under the seat. I never even considered whether it might be illegal.
It was an opened container for most of the trip but it was stored out of sight and not within reach.

The laws can vary from state to state. If you're pulling an RV with a separate vehicle, then keep the bottles in the fridge. If you're in a motor home, same except I'd be careful with "open bottles." Best bet is that once you open a bottle at the campground, share it and finish it! :-)

i don't recall ever seeing a border guard in any of the states in the USA ... maybe he is confusing us with the former Soviet Union ("your papers please") ... something might possible be illegal on the books, but it would hardly be enforceable, like fornication is still illegal here in South Carolina -- good luck with that!

now it's true, our elite betters in Washington do sometimes tell us what ~countries~ we can't visit, as though it were any of their business (hello Cuba)

Hi, I don't think there should be a problem with it. Just keep it in a fridge and don't drink and drive.

Pack 'em in your side of the dresser, wrapped up in your clothes. Surely he doesn't snoop around in your drawers?

Dresser drawers, that is. ;)
