I got an 8 year old cat about 6 weeks ago. This weekend, she developed loose stool, and vomited once. I took her to the vet, everything checked out fine, and now she's back at home, taking antibiotics, and eating a prescription food that's made to be gentle on the G/I tract. The problem is that since she came home on Monday evening, she hasn't pooped once. I know that a cat eating wet food (she normally eats dry) drinks less, but she shouldn't be dehydrated eating wet food... Her appetite is normal, and she doesn't seem to be straining or making unsuccessful trips to the litterbox. She doesn't seem uncomfortable at all. Is this something I need to counteract? It seems odd that she's gone from loose stool to none, especially with this new food. I'd rather not head back to the vet (and spend another $150) unless needed. Any help/ideas? Her old owner said she gets constipated from time to time, and has some prescription meds that she used for it, should I use that??

no give it time since she had a change in diet this is probably why she will have a b/m soon if not maybe call the vet and check about giving her the prescription med for constipation because if you are already giving her antibiotics you better make sure its ok to mix them and dont pay too much for cat food from the vet because purina one makes a food for sensitive systems which is probably the same ingredients that you probably paid $20 for at the vets office take the bag with you when you go grocery shopping and compare the ingredients

I think trying the laxatone is a good idea. Give her a little from your finger maybe twice a day for a couple of days to see if that will help move things along.

Wet food is good for her if she has this problem. A little human-grade salmon oil will give her a nutritional boost of Omega 3 fatty acids and also grease her up a bit. You can also use olive oil, a little in her food - not as good as the salmon oil and still OK. You can use butter (not margarine) to achieve the same result.

You might switch from the prescription food by starting to mix in a little Natural Balance, Eagle Pack or Solid Gold canned food too. These are really good cat foods. When you open a can and are not using all of it (because you have only one cat), put the remaining food in a pyrex dish for storage in fridge or if the weather is not hot and you will use the rest that day you can just cover it and leave it out. It develops an "off" taste when left in the can.

If your cat had been sick vomiting diarrhea etc and not eating then began it eat it can take a few days to have a normal b.m. If constipation is a concern the only way to remedy that is a return trip to your vet

If its been a few days since she has used the bathroom I would try the meds, she could have worms preventing her from using the bathroom. Try to watch her when she goes to the litter box if she is still having trouble give her the lax. if that doesn't work take to the VET she could have a blockage in her GI tract and could die.

if you can, find a place to take her outside where there are blades of grass at her nose level and see if she eats any. Cats (and most small animals including dogs) will eat grass if they feel stomach trouble... it also seems to work at clearing them out inside if you know what I mean... its like scratchy fibre for humans. Indoor cats definitely have more health problems than cats that can go outside through a cat door or whatever.

you could try getting laxatone or lactulose from your vet. They supply it and it helps to move everything along. If you wait too long it could create a bigger problem for you.
