I was running last week and somehow I tweeked my sciatic nerve. Ice seems to help but when the spot gets warm again the pain returns. Heat makes it hurt worse.

I had accupuncture yesterday and it didn't seem to do anything. Also the accupuncture guy told me not to use ice at all because it prevents healing. But without ice, I can't stand the pain.

I saw my regular MD and he told me to take advil and gave me some stretching exercises to do, but I'm in too much pain to do them.
He also gave me prescription pain killers but they barely help and make me nauseous.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

The sciatica nerve can really hurt -- even taking a step hurts. Believe it or not -- this does work. My father told me to try it when I had some severe sciatica pain going on to the point of hardly being able to take a step.

Go lay on your bed -- flat on your back. You might try it with your knees up, and your legs flat.
Now, move your hip region back and forth about 10 times or so from side to side. Keep doing this for a while. You may have to do this side to side motion many times.

The idea is to get the nerve to drop out from where it is being pinched. Once it drops out you will be sore for a bit but you will be able to tell a difference. Hope this works for you -- it did for me. Good luck - Hope it gets better for you.

Go to a chiropractor in your area and begin icing the area of pain for about 10 minutes with a 20 minute break then repeat as much as possible for the next two days to releif the inflammation then start alternating moist heat and ice using ice then heat and then ice again so it is 10 minutes ice 10 minutes heat and then 10 minutes ice and repeat 3-5 times per day this will cause fresh blood to flow to the area for healing and ice to remove any additional inflammation then in a few days you can most likely go to just heat but never do it more then 15-20 minutes at a time with at least a 20 minute break otherwise you will lose any therapeutic benefit. Make sure if you are not getting relief with chiropractic care over a week or two of treatments ask the chiropractor to get you an MRI to see if you have any disc damage

One word of recommendation. CHIROPRACTOR.

Sciatica is caused by the sciatic nerve being pinched as it leaves the spinal column. This is caused by a mis-alignment of the bones in your lower spine. There is only one way to fix this. That is to have a Chiropractor adjust your spine to correct the problem.

Acupuncture might relieve the pain for a little bit but your spine is still crooked.

Magnets will not affect your body at all because your spine is still crooked.

Ice will reduce swelling and pain but your spine will still be crooked.

Stretching exercises like those listed by others here will help prevent future injuries by keeping things flexible. However, these exercises will not correct the current problem which is caused by your spine being crooked.

Medical Doctors do not support Chiropractors because DCs treat the cause of the pain and actually cure you. MDs will prescribe all kinds of pills that leave you with less money and a sore back. And that is because your spine is still crooked.

I have personal experience with all of this and I know that Chiropractors can prevent a lifetime of pain, misery and handicaps.

Look in the phone book or ask friends for recommendations.

Do it today.

It doesn't hurt and it's not scary.

You might try magnets (Magnet Therapy by Lawrence & Rosch) or monavie juice (monavie.com). Also check out page 48 of Dr Whitaker's Guide to Natural Healing for an interesting case history. MSM may help (The Miracle of MSM by Jacob and Lawrence).
Good luck!
