Pro:
Cats are funny (mine make me laugh EVERY day), friendly, playful, beautiful, graceful, affectionate, low-maintenance, fairly self-sufficient, good companions.
They are VERY good company!
They are quite sensitive, and affectionate. Once, when I was sitting around crying (divorce), my Petey came and curled up in my lap. He usually simply does NOT do this! (My Mikey is a lap-cat, Petey is NOT!)
If you like and want pets, but have a job, or are away from home for hours at a time, cats have their litter-box - they do not have to go outside.
Most cats are quite vocal, always making little chirping, trilling noises, and sometimes meowing, but they do not bark like dogs. MUCH quieter! ~~My cats DO fetch!~~
Cons:
If you have a "House Beautiful" type home, carefully decorated with expensive furniture, and lots of fragile antiques or bric-a-brac, you may want to think twice!
Cats shed a lot of hair, and can be VERY active (when they are not laying around, sleeping like the dead!) :-)) Although they usually step very carefully, with acrobatic grace, around things on shelves (the trouble starts when you GRAB the cat, and try to PULL it off the shelf - kitty may kick and struggle!), sometimes when they are in their "active phases" (tearing around like their tails are on fire, for reasons known only to THEM!) they might knock stuff over. Some cats also simply enjoy knocking things off shelves to see what will happen (tap! tap! tap! CRASH! Wow! happens every time...)! :-))
Cats like to CLIMB. Your furniture, shelves, counters, and refigerator are their jungle-gym!
Cats like to sharpen their claws. Your furniture looks like an excellent choice, to them!
Some cats are able to open closets, cupboards, and sliding doors! My Mikey has clever little monkey-paws, opens these things up, then spreads their content over the floor. He definitely believes they appear better displayed thus! :-))
This makes me laugh. A different type of person might not find it so amusing! :-))
Some cats throw up a lot, or bring up furballs from time to time - then you have to clean and de-spot the carpet.
You, or someone in the household, may be allergic to cats (my b/f and I are BOTH allergic to cats, but we both keep cats!).
If you want worship, or adoration - get a dog! If you want mutual respect and affection - get cats!
The litterbox only takes 2 or 3 minutes to clean, but it must be kept clean, daily, or it may stink, and the cats may refuse to use it, preferring your carpet, instead! I have to clean mine out twice a day, morning and evening, but my cats ALWAYS use the box.
This is very good for working on your humility, however! It is VERY difficult NOT to be humble, when you start each day, on your knees, performing latrine duty for a pack of goofy animals! :-))
Get scoopable litter, not the extremely cheap clay stuff! TRUST me on this one! It lasts much longer, and REALLY eliminates litterbox odor!
You may have to sweep your floor a lot. My cats like to scoop their dry cat food out of the bowl, scatter it over the kitchen floor, then chase the bits around before eating them! :-))
So, I sweep the floor a lot. It is a very Zen activity! :-))
They like to spill their water, too. I have a heavy ceramic bowl, that they cannot turn over!
Trips to the vet for shots and spaying or neutering are an expense (but OH SO VERY worth it!).
If you let them go outside (I do not) they will get fleas and ticks, injuries from fights with other cats, contribute to unwanted litters of kittens (if not fixed), and might get hit by a car, or attacked by a dog, or raccoon, or some other animal. They will also occasionally attempt to "feed" you by bringing home dead birds and mice for you (sometimes partially eaten - YUK!), which must then be disposed of.
LIke I say, if you have a perfect, pristine, home, cats may not be for you (Get two, or more - they keep each other company when you are gone!)!
You have to WANT cats to keep cats! Think it over before you decide! :-))
