On one level, yes. Life is a series of choices, and an ethical person will generally make choices that lead toward self-mastery. We all choose, on a daily basis, whether or not to behave in a sane and moral manner. I want to improve my lot in life, rather than to drown in irresponsibility and mundane, boring trivia. However, having said that, I'm not master of a few important details. I had no choice about when I was born, and ruling out suicide, I have no idea of when I'm going to die. In fact, I don't even know what will happen to me within the next five minutes (I have a reasonable belief that I'll simply fix a bowl of ramen noodles, but I could also be hit by an airplane crashing into my living room).

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY EXTERNAL FORCES THERE ARE IN THE WORLD? EVEN NOT COUNTING OTHER HUMANS, THERE ARE ANIMALS, PLANTS, WEATHER, GEOLOGIC FORCES, ASTRONOMICAL EVENTS. . . . .

To a point for a few reasons. You can control how hard you try and the amount of effort you put in. You can't control where you start out or your atmosphere. Hope this helps!
