My husband's dentist has told him that his excessive development of tartar can be hereditary. I thought tartar came from plaque that was not removed from the teeth on a regular basis. He's recommended that he come for a professional cleaning each three months instead of the normal 6 month time frame. Is this really hereditary or is he just not brushing like a big boy?

Yes, it is somewhat hereditary. Some people's mouths have more of certain bacteria which allows plaque and tartar to form very quickly, faster than usual. Their immune systems may not also be able to keep the oral bacteria under control as well as it should, so these bacteria are allowed to flourish and cause plaque and tartar to form excessively. Yes, it is kind of unfair, some people have really lousy oral hygiene but nothing happens to them while some people take really good care of their mouths but they still get oral problems sometimes.

No you dentist is right!!!! It is hereditary...and its called periodontal disease and guess what if your husband has it your kids my have it...so keep on them. Now the best treatment has been explained to you...deep cleaning now in 3 months perio maintance and 3 months from then a deep cleaning....and again perio maintance until your dentist can get your husbands mouth under control. Home care is very important...brushing 3 times a day and flossing 2 a day. also you can ask your dentist to give you a test to see how well he's doing...their are color tabs to chew on to see where you need to brush better. Also try an electric tooth brush.

It is hereditary, some people's mouths have a different chemical make up that makes that happen.
