Check out this list to see if you have one of these ChexSystem free banks near you:
http://www.badcreditinfo.com/non_chexsystems_banks.htm
It sounds like you or your ex-wife wrote some bad checks and even if you paid them, you are now "black listed" from the majority of banks. It is extremely hard to get off of these lists, if not impossible.
Good luck!

If you had an account previously in your ex- wife and yourself name and the account was overdrafted an excessive amount of times because of checks and/or ACH(electronic withdrawals), whether you were the primary or secondary owner on the account, you both will be reported to chex systems. Contact your ex and find out what happened, then contact the bank and have the situation rectified so it won't cause you any further problems in the future.

The bank that denied you the savings account should give you a phone number to call. They can tell you what the problem is. Even if the problem is with your wife, if you are in a community property state, it is also your problem. In the mean time some grocery stores will cash paychecks, or you might be able to get a friend or relative to help you cash the check. I usually deposit my checks into my sister's account and she withdraws the funds as soon as the check clears.

I don't know where you live, but if you don't mind having direct deposit try Citibank or Wamu. They don't check if you open your account online. I don't have any branches near me but you may. I'm with Wamu and I actually save money because I can't run to the bank everytime I want to buy something unneccesary. I take out $100 a week for myself, use bill payer for my regular bills and my debit card for other things. Yes, I'm in Chex systems. If you don't want to do that, you just need to write or call them and find out what the problem is.
Good Luck.

The worthies have answered and these must be good advices. I am not a technical expert but an accont holder who had similar difficulty previously. Please check if your separated wife has claimed a stake in the account(Was it a joint account?) Why can't you leave this bank and go to another one and open a separate savings account? I did.Somebody spoke of some debts. Are you indebted to the current bank and have defulted so that they are crediting your paycheck to your debt account? If so you would have to settle that or else this laibility would pursue you to other banks also.

If you are having problems with the Chex system, it is because someone passed bad checks with your name on them.
Only suggestion- use the check and go or a local bar to cash your paycheck!
