You can reproduce the look by learning some basic lighting and posing techniques. Here's a basic guide to portrait photography:

Try to imitate the styles of photos that you like...just shoot lots of photos. You'll learn soon enough through trial & error.

From the looks of it, he's using the Canon L seres lenses. And from the first few pics, looks like a 24-70 f/2.8L. But I believe he may have others as well.

Anyway, I think the lenses you stated in your favourites list could pretty much do the trick. However, if you can afford it, I suggest the 85 f/1.2L and 135f/2L as well. These two lenses are really great for portraits, especially mid to medium-closeup shots.

Another thing you might want to consider after your lens purchases would be filters. These can help make or break a photo...

Nice shots! On that page he probably used several different lenses. (not to mention the lighting in some shots).
If you're into portrait photography and you want the best there is for that purpose, you want the 85mm f/1.2 ($2000 retail). (It looks like that picture top left coud be an 85 f/1.2 with the lens hood on)
If you're on a budget, get the 85mm f/1.8 ($340 retail). You mentioned it, you like it, now buy one. Simply stop it down to f/2.8 or f/4 and blast away.
The Canon 135mm is also excellent, but too long on a 1.6 crop camera. And the zooms that you mentioned, while great, are not the best for this purpose.

If you're talking about using a Canon camera (the Rebel?) then you're best off using Canon lenses. They make some of the best lenses in the business. Tamron lenses are much poorer quality. Always start with the best lens you can before worrying about filters and such. For shooting people, good portraits are made with a slightly long lens, usually an 85mm if you're shooting in 35mm film or its digital equivalent.

You already got all the good lenses, just use some Photoshop tricks to make it sharp. http://www.photo96.com/tr/ps/usm_01.htm
Or, if you really want to spend a lot of money, here is a sample from the $30,000 equipment. http://www.killerphotos.com/wedding12.html
