Fasting is not going without water and there have been a large number of documented 40-day fasts. My longest was seven days. Physically it would have been easy to go longer. Two to four days are common with me.
Note in Scripture that Jesus was hungry not thirsty. The devil suggested bread and not water.
I think Moses may have been sustained for 40 days without water. You see he went up on the mountain with the Word in spirit form and was sustained by Him.
Jesus on the other hand was the Word made flesh on the mountain. Having taken physical form to suffer as a man; He could not be sustained without water as was Moses.
Fasting without some understanding can be life threatening, especially in the method of breaking the fast.

The doctors in my church tell us we can only go 3 days without water, but we can go many days without food. Apparantly the hunger pangs stop after 3 days (I wouldn't know I've never tried beyond 43 hours!). If you don't drink plenty of water you get headaches, and it's dangerous to take painkillers on an empty stomach. Not eating also gives you bad breath. But God will do amazing things when we fast and pray.

As a Muslim, I believe that fasting any day is good because God always will bless the one who fasts not on Ramadhan. If I were to fast for 40 days, yes I will. Its only a month and 10 days. I will get use to it and am still use to it.
Peace...

in case you'll do what's in the Bible, I recommend you truly examine it first. Jesus did not bypass 40 days without ingesting. He spent 40 days in the desert. The human body can bypass about 3 days without water. i imagine you could bypass about a month without nutrition. At a large gamble, Jesus went almost so some distance because the human body can likely bypass, yet no one is going that lengthy without water.

The longest I've ever fasted is a mere 5 days. But as far as food AND water goes, it's difficult to go more than a week without
both. Since our bodies are about 70 % water, a deficiency of about 10-12% would be enough to cripple or kill you.

The survivor's Three Threes:
3 minutes without air [before you die].
3 days without water.
3 weeks without food.
3 weeks (21 days) is an approximation, but not close to 40 days. The bible also mentions over so-amazing-they're-questionable feats. Adam and Noah lived for centuries upon centuries.

You can go 40 days without eating.
You wouldn't last 4 days without drinking. Water is essential and required daily.

went 6 weeks once. That with out drinking does not mean totllay abstaining from water and the figures about how long a person can go without eating is over 6 months depending on how full your storge unit is.

It's part of the "Rule of Three": Three minutes without air, three days without water, three weeks without food. You can "fast" for as long as you like. Fasting does not require the complete denial of food and drink.
