I need to find downloadable documents which describe the way a self-directed learner learn a second language -not interested in pronounciation aspect-. I suppose that they start with short sentences, whose structures(syntax) are as similar as possible to their first language ... but I must refer to some previous scientific publications

I learned English out of comic books. About 1,200 of them.
The first ones took me 1:45 hours to read, the last ones took 15-20minutes.

The most effective means of learning the written aspect of a foreign language is by studying samples of the simplest form of writing in the given language.

Usually early childrens' books are the best way. They contain enough pictures that one can find the meaning of a word without a dictionary. Continuous use of such materials gives one a very basic vocabulary base on which to build.

Grammatical patterns are usually very easy to recognize in such simple texts, allowing for the absorption of knowledge prerequisite to advancement.
