I do not want to pay the money to have it preserved because I will be doing that after the wedding. I do not want to have to pay for it twice. The wedding will be in about a year, and I dont want my dress to turn yellow.

If you're storing it only for a year until your wedding date it should not turn yellow at all, but keep it away from the sunlight and in a protective CLOTH bag of some sort (Plastic can speed yellowing and may have dyes on it from the company that made it which could bleed onto your dress).
For the preservation of your dress (After your ceremony) find a dress preservation company that DOES NOT invalidate the warranty if you should choose to open the box and look at your dress.... many preservation "specialists" do this and it is unnecessary and a sham.... what if you opened it 25 yrs later to find as many women have that the dress is indeed stained and it is now set, or worse that the dress is missing entirely! DO NOT fall for this. If you need the name of a company that has a policy where you will be able to open the packaging your dress is in without invalidating the warranty email me and I will give you the name of the one I use. Good Luck.

I've had my wedding dress in the original plastic bag for 10 years. And it's not yellow, yet. I always think about taking it in, and then I get busy and forget.

Maybe just to be sure, call the store you got your dress from and ask how long it would take to turn yellow, or call your local dry cleaners and ask.

My wedding dress has been in a garment bag in a closet in a spare room for 17 years and is as pure as the day I wore it. It is made of heavy bridal satin. Don't worry about a year!

First, wrap it in a white sheet. Don't put it in a plastic garment bag: buy a cloth one, or just use the sheet. Hang it in the back of the closet, and make sure that it is no where near smoke.

Take it to a dry cleaners to have them box it for you. They use a special box that does not allow anything in and keeps it white also if you shop around you can find a cleaners that will put it in a box but you can still see it in the box.

Don't get deodorant, sweat, or perfume on it. That is what causes it to turn yellow.
Keep it in a dark area and in a closed bag.
