It isn't in the Bible at all. It is a man made conseption that is used to justify sin.

No it doesn't, the only way to purge your sins is repentance--which is defined as a solemn oath to never commit that same sin again--Christs blood alone doesn't save you from anything and yes, you ARE going to hell. there was a time when saying something this ignorant of the Lord's word was considered blasphemy and punishable by death--ah! for the good old days........

Catholics believe in purgatory so that when an infant dies before it can get baptised, it doesn't go directly to hell--it's a way to get around the sins of the father so that innocent children do not suffer and can be prayed into heaven by those who remain on this earth--if you'd rather burn babies, then you belong where you are going to end up

Two points.

+ Point one. The concept of purgation is hinted at in the Bible. Here are a couple of places:

"But if someone's work is burned up, that one will suffer loss; the person will be saved, but only as through fire." (1 Cor 3:15)

"So that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." (1 Pet 1:7)

Are you perfect now? Most people would say no.

Will you be perfect in heaven? Most people believe yes.

Purgatory (or purgation) is the process of God's love changing our imperfect selves on earth into perfect beings in heaven. Depending on the amount of change needed by different people, this can be an easy or slightly harder process.

Everyone in purgatory is on his or her way to heaven. I do not think Mother Teresa of Calcutta had a very hard time of it.

+ Point two. The Catholic Church does not only use Holy Scripture for the basis of doctrine. The early Catholic church existed before and during the time that the New Testament was written (by Catholics).

Catholics also believe that the Holy Spirit was guiding the early church (and is guiding the church today) to make the correct choices about things like:
- The Holy Trinity (which is also only hinted at in the Bible)
- Going to church on Sunday instead of Saturday (which is actually directly against one of the ten commandments)
- Which books to include in the New Testament?
- How do our imperfect selves on earth get to be perfect in heaven?

This second source of doctrine is called Holy Tradition.

With love in Christ.

there are many differing refernces to hell and some of them do ot indicate hell is an eternal damnation so it makes sense to me that purgatory could exist-if I believed that stuff. But mostly purgatory is where you go after your relatives (if they can afford it) "buy" your way out of hell-if you are a catholic.
Men in the Bible are said to be in hell, Sheol-Hadees, and in "The lowest hell," while on earth. Deut. 32: 22; Jon. 2: 2; Rev. 6: 8.
Men have been in Hell, Sheol-Hadees, and yet have escaped from it. Ps. 18: 5, 6; II Sam. ; Jon 2: 2; Ps. 116: 3; 86: 12-13. Ps. 30: 3; Rev. 20: 13.
God delivers men from Hell, Sheol-Hadees. I Sam. 2: 6.
All men are to go there. No one can escape the Bible Hell, Sheol-Hadees. Ps. 89: 48.
There can be no evil there for there is no kind of work there. Eccl. 9: 10.
Christ's soul was said to be in Hell, Sheol-Hadees. Acts 2: 27-28.
No one in the Bible ever speaks of Hell, Sheol-Hadees as a place of punishment after death.
It is a way of escape from punishment. Amos 9: 2.
The inhabitants of Hell, Sheol-Hadees are eaten of worms, vanish and are consumed away. Job 7: 9, 21; Ps. 49: 14.
Hell, Sheol-Hadees is a place of rest. Job 17: 16.
It is a realm of unconsciousness. Ps. 6: 5; Is. 38: 18; Eccl. 9: 10.
All men will be delivered from this Hell. Hos. 13: 14.
Hell, Sheol-Hadees, will be destroyed. Hos. 13: 14; I Cor. 15: 55; Rev. 20: 14.

Purgatory is a misunderstood principal. Read 1 peter. There you will find talk of Christ going to preach to the spirits in prison between his death and resurection. Appon his second comming all those that have excepted him and repented of their sins. Will be judged and recieve their inheritance. To assume that all will be equal is to assume that we are all the same. All will be resurected and recieve a perfected physical body but our spiritual judgement will be based on our life here. "now is the day of your salvation." Purgatory is this idea taken out of context. It is not a place where sinners go. It is a place where all go to await the return of christ. Only those who are perfect can stand in the presence of God and that means Physically and spiritually. There for we have to await the resurection some where. That is plain and simple logic.

If I remember correctly, people who are canonized by the
Catholic Church have to burn in Purgatory for 1,000 years.
It is after this cleansing of their sins by fire, that they achieve true
sainthood.

I don't know if this belief is still being used today.

When you read about blood purging sins from a non-believer standpoint, it sounds really creepy, very Charles Manson like

Purgatory DOES NOT exist.

There is NO mention of it in the Holy Bible.

Yes, only the blood of the Lord Jesus cleanses us from from sin and covers us in His righteousness.

have you noticed that a Catholics Bible actually says that on it...Catholics Bible. So I am assuming there might be some stuff in there that is not in THe Bible or missing stuff...otherwise they would be using a NIV or KJV or something...
Thats just my guess
