It seems so many high school age ( 17 to 20 year olds ) go into the military. How come you don't see thousands of college students lined up and begging to go into Iraq? Why only the poor people go?

Haven't you pretty much answered your own question? Why would anyone intelligent enough to enroll in college join the military so they can go to Iraq and maybe get vital body parts shot off or even worse? The military has always been where the poor and disadvantaged go - and if they survive - they use their military benefits to go to college. Look at VietNam - it was the poor who fought while the rich like Georgey Boy Bush got in the Air National Guard and went AWOL without being punished. Same thing this time only there's no draft.

This is a rather ignorant question. Just because you choose to join the military does not mean you are poor, and just because you go to college doesn't mean you are rich.

Most college students don't want to worry about the rest of the world or dedicate 1 weekend a month to their country. Once they graduate they have other jobs available so they don't even consider the military.

"How come you don't see thousands of college students lined up and begging to go into Iraq?"

You think there hasn't been a few thousand college students to join the military?

Do your country a favor. Think before you ask ignorant questions on yahoo answers.

Once again your a little off. Every officer in the Army, Navy, Airforce and Marines is a college graduate. Thats a few hundred thousand. Plus if you look entry level enlisted soldiers, sailers, Marines and Airmen you will find many that have college. I almost have my masters degree. My CPT is a ND grad. So, once again you are totally mistaken. Just because you want to slam.... the military? College students? High school students? Everyone?

I think its absurd that you believe only the 'poor people' go. I just got out of the military and my husband is still active duty. I'm a full time college student and we are living quite comfortably off of just his paycheck. I think college students aren't lining up to go to Iraq because public opinion and support of this war is low. If Americans, as a whole, believed in whats being done then I believe that there would be thousands of college and high school level people lining up. And heres something to think about, maybe the high school students are joining the military to have their education paid for and not to go fight a war. As long as you're active duty your tuition and fees are cover up to $4500 a year. And if you signed up for the GI Bill in basic training once you separate you can receive up to $1034 a month for anything you need. This more than covers my tuition, fee and books...it also pays for our vacations.

I love all the people that come on here saying that people who join the military are ignorant/stupid/poor. I'm sure if you went and actually looked at those who are in the military, you would find your fair share of those who came from backgrounds where they were well off and got a good education.

Another argument against the "stupid" deal. Take a look at the comparative grades of members of ROTC detachments at colleges. I am willing to bet that 90% of the time, they are higher.

The people joining the military often have college in mind afterwards, and are just looking to serve their nation beforehand, or in some cases, afterwards. I personally believe it doesn't matter who is in power, most likely those in power will change before a military career is over anyway.

You know as well as we do, this has always been the trend. When there was a draft, the college boys kept their feet to the fire because they would get pulled right of of school if they didn't keep up their grades.

Those people who choose not to go to college are more inclined to sign up just for something to do. he seventeern and eighteen year olds are especially vulnerable to this.

Not everyone in the military is poor. There are people from every walk of life and every income level, active in the armed forces.

Iraq is a special challenge to our guys in uniform. Look how many volunteer to go back to Iraq. I suppose for many, the signing bonus is a big incentive to return. I doubt that any of them have a death wish, but at that age, they consider them selves invincible.

Now you're claiming that only rich people go to college? Anyone who wants to attend college in the United States can do it. There are grants and loans out there for everyone, and even if it's not the school of their choice, people can still further their education.
There are plenty of people in the Military with college degrees, and even if someone goes into the Military to receive benefits and money for college, then it's a smart move! My husband has received a bachelors degree, and we have paid nothing out of pocket for it! And his entire law school will be covered by his G.I. Bill. So while most of the other students he graduates with will have to start paying back student loans after graduation, my husband will be able to just concentrate on opening his firm and starting his new career without money coming out of our pockets to pay off loans.

In our capitalist system, it cost a fortune to go to Univ. and there usually is not that money on the other side of the tracks. Plus they would have to build more universities if poor people wanted to go. Same old same old, the children of the poor and working class serve as cannon fodder. The children of the rich hang out in universities with aline or two or more, than after daddy buys you a degree or two, you, by this time may be a bit burnt out, but you can still fake it in an elected position such as , oh I don't know, maybe the most powerful position in the world. And all your college buddies go on to control the finances of the nation , to guarentee that the cycle goes on.

Becuase those that go to college or are rich think they are to good to go to war, if it was up to me I would make everyone serve at least 2 years in the military to make them a better person, and show them that not everything is given to them on a silver plater. If they served in the military then they who know they are no better then the poor or less educated.

A lot of soldiers attend College while in the military. The military encourages it and pays for it. Just because you join the military doesn't mean you want to go to war, some people actually have enough pride in their country to fight for YOUR freedom!
