The correct answer is yes...an employer can require employees to have vehicles & insurance, particularly if the job involves driving for the company, either in your own car or a company vehicle. If you are involved in an accident, get hurt, hurt someone else, etc. the company you work for can be held liable if you are driving without a valid license or insurance. They simply want to protect themselves from liability.

Hope this helped.

Only if they require you to drive your vehicle as part of the job would this make any sense.

Most auto policies won't cover you while driving an employer's vehicle and the few that do will only be as excess to the employer's coverage and/or to cover your liablility for the employer's deductible if it's higher than yours.

That said, an employer is free to set any conditions of employment that they wish.

Of course they can. They can set almost any rule for their employees to work for them...if you don't want to ge a license and auto insurance, then you have to look elsewhere to work for them. About the only thing an employer cannot do is require something illegal or to hire in a discriminating fashion--i.e. using race, creed, color, national origin, sex as a basis to hire or deny employment.

Yes,
your employer can require that you have a valid liscence and auto insurance.

Where I work all employees must be insurable and we run a motor vehicle report on all potential employees.

We also do criminal backround checks and pre-employment drug testing.

If the employee is responsible for transportation of any kind owned by the Company or if you are going for a sub contractor position which involves driving...most definitely they are well within their rights to insist on these things.

if you don't have one or either...the employer shouldn't hire you :)

NOTE: I'm using "you" as a definition, not to imply that I think you yourself are in this situation...just for the record :)

An employer can insist anything if it is his business. If the demands are unreasonable then don't work there.
