My daughter will be 3 in december. she has been in speach therapy since she was one. we started the speach in arkansas and now we're with new people in new mexico. my daughter is doing pretty good so far, but all of a sudden they want her to see an occupational therapist. at first i was ok with that, but then i look it up and it says its for children with severe delays. which is insane, the only thing my daughter doesn't do is talk. she has no mental problems. and the people in arkansas said she didn't need anything except the speech. this has me completely stressed out. i would like to know how other parents with children in speach handle the stress. and if you would tell the new speach therapist "no" if you didn't think your child needed this.

I too live in New Mexico is your daughter seeing therapists in the Tresco Tots program? I think that program kinda likes to cover all the bases better safe than sorry kind of approach i guess. Can be very frustrating! Please ignore all the dumb people that tell you she is not old enough for speech therapy yet. People who do not have a delayed child do not know what they are talking about. Getting early help can prevent learning delays once your child is in school. If you would like to chat more please email me erica_nell@yahoo.com.

My daughter went to speech therapy when she was 3 (she's now 8) she had a mild speech problem
She also saw an occupational therapist, i wasn't worried about this at all, she also saw a physio therapist. It all worked in together and now she is doing wonderfully. My son has been diagnosed with severe speech and language delay disorder and has had no where near the amount of care my daughter has, he is now six and repeating preschool and way behind all his peers. If you are being offered help, take it, I would love for my boy to see an occupational therapist,

First of all, a one year old doesn't need to be in speech therapy. Having worked with speech therapists, the average age children start is 3, unless there are other problems. Many speech problems are developmental and are corrected with age. My child started speech therapy at 3 and continued until third grade. Is your child not talking because everyone talks for her? This is a very common problem. You may want to see another therapist and get another opinion if you don't feel comfortable with this therapist's opinion. As a parent, I found it extremely difficult to face the fact that my child had a problem and needed help. Good luck.

occupational therapy has nothing to do with her being mentally "handicapped". She may have a hearing disorder that resulted in her speech problems. Obviously the doctors in Arkansas didn't pick up on that, usually when there is a speech development problem it is because of a hearing impairment...and that doesn't mean mentally retarded. She obviously has some developmental issues they want to evaluate in order to make her school learning experiences less stressful and more geared to her needs.

If she is behind in any of her development it is worth it to take her to the occupational therapist. My son was a preemie (Almost 3 months early) and went to occupational therapy for his first year, and he just turned 2 in Aug and has no delays at all because they showed me different exercises to do with him.

Your stepdaughter's issues are consistent with language postpone. If her vocabulary is the comparable as your 2 a million/2 year-previous's, she is extra effective than 12 months in the back of schedule. Her speech sounds are in the back of schedule by potential of in easy terms approximately six months (in line together with her "language age" of two a million/2, her speech sound progression is in certainty interior everyday limits). Please do no longer attempt to superb this on your individual; you're a be certain, no longer a speech pathologist. US public colleges are required by potential of federal regulation (PL ninety 4-142) to grant a "loose, perfect public coaching", which consists of speech therapy. touch your interior sight college district workplace and ask for an assessment ASAP. as quickly as the assessment is carried out, she would desire to qualify for Head initiate and speech therapy.

An occupational therapist would work with motion to increase range of motion in her jaw (I'm assuming). I wouldn't panic, but would ask what their intentions are on improving your daughters speech. Are they working with her motion of her mouth relating to exercises. If thats all it is, its not anything I would panic about. Talk to them, get the whole deal. If it is something you totally disagree with, then a second opinion is in order. Good luck!

You're the mother and you have to follow your instincts. If you don't think it is necessary, then don't do it. I hope that everything turns out well for you.
However, if there is a little bit of niggling doubt, have her evaluated. Maybe the OT will tell you that they don't have to do anything.
You have to listen to your heart and head, and do what sits right with your conscience.

Sounds to me like they are trying to make more money off you. i would tell them you want a second opinion. i am sure they would be making double the money they are now if they put your daughter in two therapies. i would do more checking first before i let them do that. good luck.
