I am mainly interested in the Woyak family who settled in the Wisconsin area. I don't really know where to start. I do not live anywhere near Wisconsin, so this might be a difficult task.
Any suggestions on getting started?

I have just gone to the Woyak dot com site and left them a messege. Looks like they are from MN though.

Hey IrishOsag...,

Not personally, but here are some sites that have. and, the last is over 10 pages of search results. The state does not matter, the internet is full of help.

Not knowing all of what you know or where you are starting from, I recommend a software package to track the names and work backward from yourself. Gather all your information from your living relatives you can. Interview them, get dates, events, records, births, deaths, obits, wills, probate, court, land any records you can.

Then document in the software what you have. Go up the Woyak tree one branch at a time. You can get vital records (birth, death, marriage) for anyone you can name, and say you have their birth date. That record will give their parents and their birth dates and locations. So you can work backwards that way. Marriage records include parents and their birth and location also. Obituaries can be found in the town, city where the person died. You can get librarians to help. Maybe even free.

Start looking on the internet at the plethora of information. Search the LDS Family Search for Woyak. I did this for you, and found 103 records. Excellent information there. See the web site.

Below are included some Vital Records sites - to help. You can get cheaper birth records at town halls. for hard to find ones, go to the state at the Vitla records site below, pay a lot. Best to go to the town or city, call, visit on internet too! Usually $4 versus $40.

When you want to find a new site: try Cindi's list - a list of lists of genealogy sites. Too much information, but keep going back.

On your name, go to Ellis Island, and see if maybe they came in that way, to the US. The Ellis Island site is FREE - but you have to register.
