i have an old realistic am / fm reciever with a built in 8-track player, and phonograph player input. this unit was built in the early 1960's and is fully transistorized {no tubes}
there is also an antenna connection system. basically two screws with a brown wire poking out. the amplifier i am using is a dolby 5.1 surround system with a 10 band equalizer. the antenna is a rabbit ears / bowtie antenna combo i built myself and hooked into an old signal amplifier pack then hooked into the stereo. the antennas get hot when i get close to a lock on a radio station, but i still have problems getting good reception. i live in the bottom floor of an apartment complex in shelbyville indiana. about 30 miles south east of indianapolis, where most stations are. what can i do to acheieve maximum signal quality

1.-Use an external antenna, maybe a folded dipole for FM oriented to the best group of radio stations that you hear.
2.-Use a long (more then 30 meters) isolated conductor like an AM antenna, that's because the AM inputs are of high impedance and a long conductor like's a high one.
3.-If you can't use external antennas, the only way to get better signal is with a LOW NOISE Preamp, better if it's constructed with FETs or MOSFETs and I guess with more than 15 to 20 dB gain.

Get a good outdoor FM antenna and put it as high as possible, roof is ideal. Get rid of the amp, it should never make an antenna "hot"!
