Children have minds that are developing. That is a perfectly normal and healthy part of beginning to understand one's own power of imagination. He or she will discover in time that is only a piece of their imagination, thereby understand their own creative power mentally.

Multiple personalty disorder is a debilitating illness. It's much more that the public can percieve. To them, it's a fluke of pop pscyhology for thier entertainment. In reality, it's a life-threatening disease, in/accurately portrayed in a script, played by the beautiful young Sally Fields in Sybil, and other hollywood protrayals. And it is extremely rare.

Hi hun! Imaginery friends are totally different then multiple personalities. Multiple personality disorder is caused by sever abuse of some kind, that usually happens to a child. The child is not able to handle the abuse so the mind splits off and brings about another personality who is stronger than the child to take the abuse. Usually a person with Multiple personality, do not even know their is another personality helping them out, they usually have black outs and lose time. Not all adults believe having an imaginery friend is cute. If the child is protected and safe from any kind of abuse, having an imaginery friend is helpful to the child especially if the child does not have any brothers or sisters to play with. I hope I helped! Hugs! Von

A child having imaginary friends up to age 7 is normal. They create their own "safety friends".

Having multiple personalities is very different. This is when people believe THEY are one or the other or other and so on. They are not seperate being who know each other. Most MP patients are not hospitalized for life, sometimes if it is out of control or meds need adjusting for evaluation and only if it is severe become residential patients.

I work with children who currently have or has had multiple personalities as well as other mental inabilities that may arise. Studies now show that children of multiple personalities if caught early enough can be DE programed and helped to digress those personalities. It is far more easily done with children of adolescent age than with adults. Many adults merely go undiagnosed for more than half their lives. Once it is diagnosed it is usually uncontrollable and more dangerous to deal with. Therefore they are more likely to be hospitalized for some short term as well as long term care. Adolescents (children) are more traumatized if they are thrown into mental hospitals and exposed to others whom are far worst off than they themselves are less accessible to treatment. I hope that I have answered your question.

Because the child just has an imaginary friend not several personalities of it's own.

multiple personalities, and having imaginary friends is two completely different things...it's one thing to have a vivid imagination,...and pretend to be someone else...but a person who truly suffers from multiple personalities does not communicate and play tea party with the other ones..

the more common term for "multiple personalities" now is "Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)" not to be confused with Schizophrenia which some people are affected with paranoia, visual, auditory or olfactory hallucinations, disorganized thinking etc. pop "DID" into wikipedia.com...it is VERY uncommon that doctors diagnose clients with DID nowadays and not everyone goes into the hospital, I agree with lori above...good answer

They're NOT the same thing. multiple personalities means your personality is no longer one whole coheisive thing. You can do things and a few hours later when your other "personality" becomes the dominant one, you won't remember saying or doing things.
